When I had to screen mine after the wasps were gone I used regular window screen material and a hose clamp.
I think for squirrels he'll have to use some kind of metal screening so they can't chew through it.

Man is that squirrel gonna be mad when he finds his stash is missing! Don't be surprised if he starts throwing a tantrum on the roof or starts throwing stuff at you when you walk by!

When we lived in Lakewood our neighbors had apple trees. The squirrels would raid the apple trees and sit on our garage eating them. When they were done they would throw the cores into our yard. We thought it was the kids throwing the cores in the yard, until one day I was standing at the kitchen window and watched the squirrels throw them at our dogs. I went out and threw rocks at the little buggers. After that, they they stock piled the cores and waited for us to come out and bombarded us with apple cores. It was a hard winter that year and took a toll on the squirrel population as well as the apple trees. They never came back!

Exactly what I did, but when I got about 7' down I hit a fairly solid mass. Can't see what it is, but pretty certain it's more of the same...but compacted. Finished basement too. Going to be tearing out some drywall.

Wife's a country girl, and has a wicked-good squirrel and dumplings recipe, but fried sounds good too. Now to figure out which wine goes good with 'tree rat'.

good to hear you've removed the block .... how do you plan to cap the vent pipe so that it will work and yet your furry friends can't make the same mess again

Going to form some 1/4" to 1/2" hardware cloth into a dome shape and secure them with hose clamps [then wire them up to 220V - kidding about the 220V, but it did cross my mind ]. I thought about modifying some PVC end caps, but the way these squirrels chew through walnut shells, PVC would be like cream cheese to them.

I am open for suggestions though. Didn't see any "out of the box" solutions at Lowe's to prevent this kind of damage.

No problem. I've got some 28ga galvanized left over from when I installed my new furnace and A/C, and all the tools necessary to make them. I like the design! Would look much better than what I had in mind with the hardware cloth. Thanks for the idea/link! Pics when completed [raining for the nest few days].
