Waffling On Base Price. Can They Make $6,800?

Many people think the $6800 price is artificially low and unrealistic. I do think current reservationists will likely have the $6800 price honored (and yes, they will honor the discount for all-inners). It's likely that after a few months in business or a bit longer they'll announce a price increase for the following year. My guess is that if the car takes off, some moderate price increases (say, under 10%) will not clobber demand. If it doesn't take off, about 45,000 of us will own collector cars.

There is an asterisk after the $6800 on the sign.

The asterisk has always been there. Read the fine print of the agreement. It gives more info.

For all of those complaining about the asterisk (*), or for some reason selectively not seeing it, this is the fine print text from the ElioMotors FB page:

*Starting MSRP excludes options, destination/delivery charge, taxes, title and registration.

Don't see anything deceptive about that. Pretty much the fine print on all advertising.

I believe the $ 1000 all inners will see the $6800 base price. Primarily due to PR. Credibility of your word is important to any business. If you lose that, it doesn't matter how good your product is made. After that, I'm guessing the base price will rise to $7300.

If you keep on saying "That lowlife politician is going to raise my taxes by 10%" you are sending that low life politician a message.
When you keep saying " I thought product XYZ was going to cost $5K but I know I will have to pay $5.5K" you are sending a message.
The message you are sending is that it is alright to raise my taxes or my cost by this much.
Is that what you really mean? Is that the message you really want to send?
Don't ever say "It's alright to charge me more". Make them fight to keep costs down!
If they don't have to fight to keep costs (to you) down, they won't.
If they fight to keep the cost down and still can't, at least they will have tried.
If you give up without a fight you will lose by default.

You see dealing with Elio Motors as a power struggle. I see it as a collaboration. That will probably change, but for right now, I'm not trying to bargain with the company. They WANT to keep the price as low as they can. What they'll actually be able to do is not clear, which Elio (IMO) is signaling by the language changes around "$6800." So be as cranky as you like, but some of us aren't in your space.
