Simply put the Elgin dash sucks
I agree. I would like to have a normal speed gauge with numbers and a needle. More of them and as few lights as possible. Also as many of us in this forum are not spring chickens, wouldn't mind for it to be pretty big. Kind of what they have on the mini cooper would be good for me. Looks old fashion and works and is easy to read.

The elgin gauges use existing gauges with a different number wheel and cover plate. Since these gauges are sold as a unit, these gauges are now unique to the elio, not used anywhere else, and contrary to Paul Elio's philosophy of using existing components. We can probably find out what gauges they were based on and drop them in place. However I hate paying for the same thing twice.

If we change the gauges, does that void the warranty on the vehicle?

I like the Elgin dash concept and I am confident, that in a final version, the numbers will be bigger and the whole dash more functional. The Elgin dash vaguely reminds me of a Citroën CX I drove. An outstanding car with an excellent interior design and the most comfortable ride I ever owned.

Is it a 25?

I wonder, is the opposition to the elgin db stylistic or functional? I can't back this up with facts or figures but it seems to me that because PE & EM has taken pains with every other aspect of this car that they wouldn't get all loosey-goosey with something as vital as the visual information center of the vehicle. It may be the one spot of vanity that PE has allowed on his creation but it still would be made functional and safe. He's not out to create something that would create a potential hazard (with accompanying lawsuits) for something he's worked hard to bring to fruition.

People have objected to either or both the aesthetics and functionality of the Elgin gauges. Some of this opposition likely stems from the normal human aversion to new things however there have also been some good questions and concerns mentioned for which all we have for answers are various theories which have been presented.

I feel it is impossible to make a decision, one way or another, based on a single initial incomplete prototype and unproven, even if well thought out, theories. When there are fully functional Elgin gauges properly installed and being used in the vehicle it will become apparent very quickly if these gauges perform acceptably or if the theories presented hold water and there are issues which need to be addressed.

Nothing EM chooses will make everyone happy as that is impossible. It is also highly likely that any gauge cluster design which makes it through testing and into the production vehicle will not have any measurable impact on sales no matter if the design is Elgin, digital, analog, or some combination of technologies.
