Why would you need permission? There is tons of "My other car is a____" stickers out there and I'm sure Ferrari and Porsche didn't give anyone permission either...

It's the Logo itself that has permissions issues. The name Elio Motors as well, but not Elio itself. All this only comes into play if you sell something commercially.
