I remember when FLIR first showed up on corporate airplanes, it was a $1,000,000 option (not kidding)
It's now a $13,000-25,000 option on corporate planes.

How hard would it be to make a non FAA/PMA certified version optimized for the automotive sector?

Yes, this is a Cell phone with thermal imaging (not quite FLIR mind you)

This piece of equipment could replace the $24,000 systems used in the electrical world for medium and high voltage systems.

(yes I really REALLY want one)

Anyway, my sleep deprived point is:

Technology is getting cheaper by orders of magnitude.

Looks like a good rugged phone (love the brand btw) however, you should look into this product. An actual FLIR camera that can plug into your Android or IPhone device. And only for a quarter of the price. Ive seen it work in person and its very high quality.
