Sequential port fuel injection. It has a mass flow sensor and senses how much air is being drawn in and injects the needed amount of fuel into the path of the air going into each cylinder. 3 cylinders, 3 injectors.

Computer controlled combined with hotrod techno dudes and just plain old crazy folks will have the mileage down to 60 and HP up enough to want bigger tires up front.........well, maybe not, but someone will without a doubt have performance upgrades in computer control, exhaust, etc. within 6 months of the release of these things on the streets.

Don't know the exact costs of going direct injection (redesign of heads, probably different pistons, probably more expensive
injectors, etc) but the results would not appear to be worth the effort, especially when one considers just how insignificant
the emissions of this car actually will be (3 times fewer [carbon] emissions per mile than a Tesla Model S, highway) ,
money much better spent elsewhere, or not at all.
Like all engines, owners will have the opportunity to attempt power uprates, but, as per usual, those attempts will
not produce much, despite the claims of speed shops. I dont believe the profile of the typical Elio owner will
include "DIY hot rod type." The car is fast enough as is. Next time you accelerate from a stoplight, measure the time
that traffic requires to hist 50 and 60 MPH. Seldom will 0-60 times under 10 seconds be a problem or hindrence.
My 1963 MGB,considered at the time as a quick little vehicle , even with a manual transmission, could barely
outrun the Elio. It was a heavier car than the Elio and its rated HP of roughly 95 was gross, not net (which would
have been roughly 72 by today's standards).

For the money, I can see a growth market for the Elio as a hobby car. There are any number of ways to go, from power, to custom graphics, to personal customs. Naturally, there will be a number of spectacular errors in judgment and taste, but it's not as if that ground hasn't been covered before . . . .

It may be the Porsche "sleep number" edition. Guardsman Red with a adjustment on the dash to dial up your preference of inflation. Seen here at the "passive pedestrian protection" setting.

It'll probably squeak like inflatable furniture - but with hydrogen power, think of the weight reduction you could achieve by storing the fuel in the body! That'll be the "Goodyear" edition (naming it "Hindenburg", although appropriate, would probably be a marketing disaster).
