A commenter on Elio Facebook said that there will be flying cars before an Elio. The race is on!

There could be flying cars before Elio, but they won't be lifting off from your neighbor's house, cruising to Safeway over houses, and returning home quickly. The only flying cars we'll see will be the ones designed to drive to an airport, extend the wings, and take off. Then when you land the wings retract and you drive around. They will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, and be will all fun and games until one drops out of the sky like a rock. Flying cars in futuristic cities like Star Wars will be in the year 3,000.

Right. And you will need both a private pilot's license and a driver's license to fly them.
