Don't forget... California has some very strange laws with regards to the importation of vehicles purchased in other states. You may very well end up shooting yourself in the foot going this route. Homework is in order.
A lot of SoCals Rulz 'n Regs have to do with emissions. and if the Elio gets beat out by a cow, that shouldn't be any problem.. Besides, you ever see a catalytic convertor on a motorcycle? (or a cow for that matter.)

Just looked 'em up. California prohibits the importation of a vehicle purchased by a California state resident unless said vehicle has at least 7500 miles on it. It does have an exemption for any vehicles not subject to emissions control regulations and that's where things get fuzzy.... California doesn't require motorcycles to be smogged every X years like normal vehicles, but on the other hand I know that even motorcycles have "CA models" so there clearly is some regulation of design there. Translation: Sounds like we're in a gray area. Probably pretty simple to clear up with a call to the DMV but my 5 minute search didn't uncover any definitive answer. I think I'd make that call to the DMV and ask for the chapter & verse before I took delivery of the vehicle in LA.

This delivery fee is interesting, I tried to pick up a truck at the plant years ago and was told that I couldn't. Then when I was at the Corvette plant I found out why you cant do this, it's because the manufacturers have contracts with the trucking company's that say that the trucking company transports ALL vehicles from the plant. You can pickup a new Corvette near the plant from the museum but it first gets shipped to the Chevy dealer nearby then they deliver it to the museum, you then don't have to pay the delivery fee but you have to pay for museum delivery which cost the same.
That's union BS. EM won't have that boat anchor around heir neck.

You might want to look into that statement. Most all current production motorcycles DO have catalytic convertors. I know this because it is one of the first things you have to modify and bore out to make riding a Harley half way tolerable since the engine is like sitting on an oven. Not a fun removal process!
You are most likely right about the Harley. I have never owned one so don't know for sure. But I think I am pretty sure about the cow though. Thankks for furthering my education.

I've owned a couple of motorcycles since '05. There's at least some minimal emissions control in place. They both had catalytic converters, evaporative emissions control and EGR. One of them was a 'CA model'.

usual transporters i don't think will work with our middle wheel,
i'd like to throw this out-
crate them with their wheels off (smaller crate) then fork-lift them into and ship vertically in a container like trailer.
any ideas?? I'm sure the engineers already got this down, but.....

Showrooms- cars rolling off the line 1/2016 plus or minus do ya think the showrooms will be completed before they start to ship, takes awhile for site locations/permits/renovations and construction?

maybe if they build the showrooms first we could=
a. meet up over free coffee (as mentioned on em website) and we bring bagels, and perhaps when we do get 'em, use the store as a meet-up location for fun riding -many BMW (motorcycle) dealers encouraged it)

b. see/touch the options and maybe each location might have a prototype, to help in making final selections.

In last weeks' Town Hall Meeting they apparently said there likely wouldn't be 'Marshalling Centers' the first year. Given that the first year's production run is likely to be sold before it even starts, even showrooms might not be needed immediately. While EM is getting good at drumming up excitement, having showrooms for a car that you can't get for a year is a lot of overhead. It will be interesting to see what they do.

I also wondered about shipping them. A typical Auto Transport has two rails - not so good for the third wheel. I suppose you could rig up a dolly for the third wheel that would straddle the rails, or ship them on a flat bed, but as light as they are, and given they're only going to 60 different locations, getting a lot of them on one truck would seem to make sense. You certainly couldn't have any fluids in them if you were going to ship them vertically, but crated, like smaller tractors, might make sense. Or maybe they induce us all to come to Shreveport and pick them up there!

They'll have a dolly to make the rear end have the same.effective track as.the front and use existing car haulers.
