I'm probably wrong but a long time ago I thought I read that the transmission and engine would share the same oil, requiring it to be changed every 3k miles. Is that even possible? Perhaps that is why the capacity is 6 quarts.

I think that was a typo, or misunderstanding from a writer. I remember reading an article that stated so, but it was debunked on this site. They use different grades of oil anyway, so,,, no.

It's definitely possible, as the 3.8 motorcycles in the garage all have shared oil sumps for the engine and gearbox. The biggest of them is 998cc and has a 3.6 quart sump. It's the easiest on oil of all of them. The 685cc single holds 2.6 quarts and can shear any oil into piss in 2500 miles. Lots of internal gears, chains, sprocket teeth, and ball bearings.

HOWEVER, I've seen enough photos of the Elio block and the Aisin gearbox that I do not believe it is a shared sump design.

Check this engine out:

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/grail-engine.htm

I wonder why it didn't take off... even in the motorcycle realm. I AM aware the last update on their website was in 2013.
They mentioned the mpg's and the horsepower, but I didn't see any torque specs.
And that was one problem 2-stroke motorshave always had; no low end "grunt"

From the GrailEngine.com website:

One Liter Engine Projections based upon vehicle weight and engine demand:
  • 100+ MPG’s
  • 180 ft lbs Torque
  • 200 Horse Power

Kind of interesting; the opening paragraph says:

It has half of that 200hp here.
