Agreed. But it is short enough (front to back) that a transaxle from a Porsche or Subaru (both boxer engines) would work nicely. Flip it so the engine's on the back side of the axles and you keep the weight fairly centered in the car, Elio, whatever you're dropping it in.

Long rods look like a harmonics nightmare.
And diesel is an uphill battle with the exhaust.

Stick with an established engine config until the electrics take over.
