If I'm not mistaken (it's been a while so my memory might be a tad fuzzy)
But the early Prisuses (Prii?) used a belt. The second and third used the power split planetary gear set.

Sorry, I don't know a lot about the 1st gen Prius. I did some searching after your comment but didn't find any reference online to it having a CVT/PSD with a belt.

I have a 2016 Honda FIT with the metal belt cvt. I Love it. When we bought our 2009 FIT I drove the AMT and hated it because it would "hunt" at the slightest headwind or grade. The CVT maintains power by adjusting the RPM seamlessly. My overall average MPG on the CVT is 40 while my average with the standard on the 2009 was 36.8. The CVT works great for slightly underpowered cars like the Elio.
