I wonder what type of "automatic shifting" transmission will be used.
The elgin gauges was originally definitely decided upon and it became a traditional gauge set.
The timing chain was originally definitely decided upon and it became a traditional timing belt.
I wonder if the automated transmission (definitely decided upon) will become a more traditional transmission.
    Everything is becoming more "traditional".

And that my friend is exactly the reason we don't have cars yet. Everything should have been "traditional" from day 1. Air conditioning? Even that could have been an ePlus item. For $6,800.00 I didn't expect a/c. They could have said backseat optional. Basically whatever it takes to make the profit margins work. I was sold on "off the shelf" technology. I didn't want anything new in my Elio. I wanted old technology that's proven to work. As for the transmission.... you bet it should be traditional. Let's just hope the "traditional" method of raising capital by selling shares on NASDAQ will come through for us. We need to hear something this week. If we haven't heard anything about NASDAQ by next Friday, September 22nd......don't ask because you don't want to know!

Problems with the existing AMTs seem to be software-related. That's relatively easy to solve.

As to the C/D review, the magazine, once the leader in automotive literacy, has descended to the depths of irresponsible, hair-on-fire, automotive sensationalism, advocating a kind of driving discipline that should be getting its practitioners jailed . . . permanently.

So much for jerky shifts, the solution would appear to be the jerk behind the wheel.

"Jerk" is a little harsh, I like "The LOOSE NUT" on the steering wheel."

I get that you are merely pointing out that even after something seems set, it can change. But, just as a service to those who may not know, here's the Press Release where Elio picked AISIN.

Elio Motors signs agreement with AISIN Group

The good thing about AISIN is they are so large, they can supply EM with a CVT or torque converter type of automatic transmission of EM decides to go that way, instead of using the AMT. Good flexibility and a way of keeping options open.

Good point. I hadn't thought of that. I'd bet they'll stick with the AMT as they seem to be pretty cheap.

Please, no CVT's, I can't stand those transmissions.
They may work in some cars, I don't think the EM is one of them.

A CVT would add an additional 2-5 MPH depending on the software efficiency.
It would be a good sales pitch and a LOT better than an AMT alternative.

Toyota HAD a good CVT solution (software) until they made them "shift" to simulate an automatic transmission's shifting impulses..... completely defeating the purpose in the first place

    All in $500
The CVT transmission relies on friction to transfer the force and many of them have to have water cooling in order to get rid of the heat from the friction. Similar with the traditional Automatic transmission. Heat is waste energy. The Automatic Manual transmission has helical gears which are more efficient at transferring rotational force. The CVT is nice in that it can maximize the motor efficiency, but as a transmission it is not more efficient.
