My thinking is that Paul and company have squeezed every last dollar out of the vehicle and suppliers that they can and are still $300-$400 short of the goal of $6,800. To make good on the price they've been quoting for literally years they're probably forced to make some things options that were originally going to be standard. For those who want a low cost basic commuter it won't matter. To those of us who intend to option the hell out of the vehicle anyway we've just got a couple more options to add to our list.
Keep in mind the original price point (way under $7500) in the 2008 Hello Elio Campaign:

in the long run do you think it will really make a difference? if you want one you will get one. yes we all want the price to be 6800.00 buy hey if it fails to come into that range will it really bust us. my guess is no. i remember way back in 72 when gas started to go up. it was .33 cents for years then .45 then .50 then .80 and all i heard was people saying if gas gets to 1.00 i will walk. how many do you see walking? people said if gas gets to 2.00 i will sell my truck and get a vw or some smaller fuel efficient car, how many are driving 10 mpg trucks today at 3.00 a gallon.

my point is no matter, the 84 mpg is what will sell the car along with 6800.00 but if it goes to 7k or 8k it will still sell people just have to wine about something.

Partially unrelated, but maybe not, I have had a wrap company tell me they dont wrap plastic panels when I was looking into this for my van, something about it not being removable without damage, and my van has all plastic panels above the beltline. Not sure how this would affect the Elios, if at all. Has anyone had a wrap company say they would do it, knowing its all plastic? Any issues?

That's an odd one...that's one of the most popular things for the Spyders...(though a bit pricey for my tastes)
I know many folks with anything from racing stripes to complete full-coverage wraps with no issues - all on plastic.

What I was told, was that there were different options(and pricing) on various wraps, with different "lifespans". Some will stay on 3 years, some will stay on 5 years, etc. Apparently they do not seem 'permanent', and I can confirm this visually as we have several wrapped business vans in the area, and some portions of the wrap are coming off. Maybe this is a poor installation, I do not know. I wondered if anyone on this forum has a wrapped vehicle and how it is holding up.

I believe member, Nathan Dufee, does this professionally. I haven't seen his name active lately but then this is a busy time of year (not for wraps but for everything else). I hope I spelled his name correctly and apologize if I did not. You can go to the members list and find a name like that and send a personal communication. If he has set his up to receive an email when pc is posted then you might get a response. Good luck. :) Z
