Flame sprayed cylinder bores in an aluminum block (no sleeves) scare me just a bit .... but we'll see. Just DON'T ever let the oil pressure drop....

Thanks for the link. If I understand it right, steel is being bonded to the aluminum cylinder wall via this process -- providing the necessary toughness to resist wear. But for how long? that is the question ....

This article has more information. Ford spent a lot of time and money developing this technology and say they have tested engines with this lining to over 250,000 miles and found that the hone patterns still looked new.

I was also able to find these two videos. The first one shows the PTWA lining being applied to a Ford F-150 Ecoboost V6 and the second one shows Comau's PTWA system which is very likely what will be used by Elio Motors in Shreveport as we already know Comau is EM's equipment and tooling provider.

Good morning and welcome. Born in East Tennessee myself. Properly maintained I see no reason the Elio shouldn't last several hundreds of thousands of miles. I once sold a man an airplane, he asked "realistically how long will it last" my answer " Forever, the real question is how long can you afford to maintain it". Being a very simple design the Elio should be very easy and inexpensive to maintain.

Like your answer. Basically I was told the same thing when I bought my first car, a Nash Rambler. It will last as long as I can maintain it. I expect my Elio to last a very, very long time.

The tires on my bug are about 12 years old and Id say they have about half tred at this point. The car weighs 1515 lbs. with me in it.
