Games from Sunday:
Chi 18, KC 17: Let's get this out of the way. My Chiefs were supposed to be good this year, and they just aren't. There was a time when it was hard for visiting teams to win at Arrowhead, but those times are long gone. Chiefs did out-rush the Bears, and had fewer penalties and turnovers, but the Chiefs' offense was much worse than the Bears'. Jamaal Charles blew out his ACL, in the 3rd qtr I believe, but last I checked he doesn't play defense, and KC's defense gave up 2 TDs in the last 3+ minutes. Kudos to Cutler and the Bears. Cutler made a great play on their last TD, as he dropped the shotgun snap, calmly picked it up and with pressure threw a TD pass in tight coverage.
StL 10, GB 24: Rams were in the game until part-way through the 3rd qtr. Yes, Rodgers finally threw an INT at Lambeau for the first time in nearly 3 years, he actually threw 2, but one was tipped by a defender with an amazing diving catch by another. Did that bother the Packers' defense? Nope. Zero points allowed in the 2nd half. Foles threw 4 INTs for the Rams. This week's games haves lots of surprising stats, here's one of them: the Rams ran the ball for 191 yds, and lost by 2 TDs. Wow. GB, 5-0.
Sea 24, Cinc 27: Here's one of the OT games, as Cincy came storming back in the 4th qtr with 17 pts and tied it to send the game to OT. Both teams threw 1 INT and had 4 sacks, but Cincy threw for 118 more yds. Sea had an RB named Thomas Rawls that ran for 169 yds (weird stat #2), and they managed to lose. Jimmy Graham: 3 receptions for 30 yds. I wonder why Sea doesn't use him more. Bengals are for real, folks. 5-0. Seahawks are 2-3.
Was 19, Atl 25: Another of the OT games, this was a low-scoring game until the 4th qtr, both teams combined for 25 pts total. Matt Ryan had a bad day, 0 TD and 2 INT, Cousins was not much better with 1 TD, 2 INT and fewer yds passing than Ryan. The Falcons got a TD with 0:24 left to go up 3, and in 3 plays the Redskins got to the Atl 34 yd line. Was kicks a 52 yd FG as time expires, and they went into OT. Was got the ball to start OT, was at the 50 yd line, and Atl gets a pick-6 to win it. Falcons, 5-0 baby.
Jax 31, TB 38: Up and down the field these two teams went, Jax throwing it and TB running it. But the Bucs had a balanced offensive attack and Winston didn't throw any INTs. Jax lost in turnovers 2-0, and despite TB having 7 more penalties, they were good on third down, 5-11. TB sacked Bortles 6 times, and his 4 TDs and 1 INT weren't quite enough.
NO 17, Phi 39: Eagles fans may have officially gone mutiny with their team if the Saints had won. It was 10-10 into the 3rd qtr, when the Saints' wheels came off. The offensive stats for the Eags for the game: 34 first downs, 519 yds total offense, of that 186 yds was rushing. Saints lost in turnovers 4-2 and had 3 more penalties. Saints were good on third down, 8-16, but had way too many defensive mistakes.
Cle 33, Bal 30: Another OT game, the Browns go into Baltimore and get a win, wow. Cle was able to overcome 4 sacks by the Ravens. Flacco threw 1 TD and no INT but otherwise was not good. Let's give some love to Josh McCown, 457 yds passing, 2 TD, no INT. Weird stat again: Bal ran the ball like crazy for 181 yds and manages to lose the game. Cle was amazing on 3rd down, 12-19. The teams combined for 21 penalties. In OT, Bal got the ball, went 3-and-out, and Cle got a nice drive and kicked a 32-yd FG to win it.
Buf 14, Ten 13: If you like defense, this game was for you. Buf only threw the ball 18 times, and gave up 4 sacks. The Bills ran for 127 yds and that was enough. Mariotta threw for 187 yds, no TD and 1 INT. Ten had 2 more penalties. Hey, if Rex Ryan's team has less than 8 penalties in a game (they had 7), it's a good day for them. The Bills somehow have a record of 3-2.
AZ 42, Det 17: It was 7- 0 Det to start the 2nd qtr, and the Cardinals scored 28 pts by halftime. It was 42-10 in the 4th qtr. Stafford got benched for the Lions, after throwing for 188 yds, 1 TD and 3 INT. AZ ran for 187 yds. Yet another surprising stat: on 3rd down, AZ was 1-8 and Det was 8-17. But I guess Det losing in turnovers 6-0 will offset that 3rd down stat. Cards are now 4-1.
NE 30, Dal 6: Ouch for the Cowboys. Brady's numbers were above avg, 20-27 for 275 yds and 2 TDs, but he was sacked 5 times. How'd Dallas lose by 24 pts? Well, Weeden only threw for 0 TD, 1 INT and 188 yds. He was sacked 3 times. And Dal lost in turnovers 2-0. And the Pats made the most of every possession. And Dallas only had 264 yds of offense. NE, 4-0.
Den 16, Oak 10: Even less offense than the Bills/Titans game, both Manning and Carr were below avg. Den did get 2 more sacks than Oak, neither team could run the ball. Get this, Denver survived somehow by having 62 more yds in penalties, going 2-13 on 3rd down, and letting Oak go 7-16 on 3rd down. Oak lost in turnovers 3-2. I know it was 9-7 Den to start the 4th qtr, and Oak lined up to kick a 40-yd FG. Janikowski misses it, and a few possessions later, Carr throws a pick-6. Oak never threatened to take the lead after that. Den is 5-0.
SF 27, NYG 30: Manning's arm fell off after the game, as he threw 54 times. 441 yds, 3 TD, 1 INT got her done for the Giants. Kaepernick had a good game for SF, 262 yds and 2 TDs and no INTs. Giants lost in turnovers 1-0, were slightly better on 3rd down, and had 2 more penalties. They were thankful for the big pass plays fer sher. 49ers defense ain't what it used to be.
