Question To All The Gearheads?

I understand that BMW have been more helpful in the USA.

According to the mechanics who service my BMW, they are continually seeing N47 engined cars with this problem and consider them a ticking time bomb.

It's a big shame because these cars are otherwise excellent to drive.

Thankfully my car has the 6 cylinder 3 litre diesel engine and doesn't have this problem.

while every word in the report may be true, I can't help be skeptical when (from the above link), " The independent study, sponsored by Gates, Conti and Dayco, uncovered a significant potential for CO2-Saving by timing belts." .... over time I've seen too many results of so called independent studies where the findings were heavily influenced by those paying for the study

Reliable numbers shows around .82% at best.
So about 2/3 of a single MPG, on an Elio (assuming 84mpg)
Not worth it. Keep that .66mpg. I'll keep reliability.

I agree ! its neglible at best.
service Iintervals outweigh any gain here.

Its mass.....its weight and rotating weight at that. Make a lighter chain.
It will make a lighter valvetrain. And be more efficient.
Just like a lighter flywheel, drive shaft, or wheel....
Or for that matter reduce over all car weight it will be more efficient.
Its mass.....not so much belt or chain.
Mpg Is neglible anyway.
And sevice intervals are the other side of this.

And no I have no link); you would not like it anyway.

Reliable, low cost, efficiency(or perfomance)
pick any two.
