Good grief, I need to spell check :(
Any way I think with the weight to power ratio being better than a late model ( :) ) MGB and almost a "rental car like" Malibu we should be fine. Also have to trust that there are "car people" involved that will not let this be a "miserable little thing". Also Powertrain is designed for the application, no compromize.

0 to 60 in 9.6 sec. is faster than my '14 Civic. Add to that
an adj. ECU allowing for an increase from 55 HP to 60HP+
& a std. speed rating of 104mph, faster if tweaked.
If the 84mpg isn't that important to you, tweak her up, & off you go!

I don't know what you said, but it sounds impressive.
Went right over my head as well! lol

My wife is actually the gear head in the family. She has changed my brakes, alternator, starter, and gave me a tune up. She has tought me a little along the way. I was able to change out my starter the last time it went out.

lol, I knew she was a keeper when we were dating. She lived about 2 hours from me. I went to see her one weekend and stopped by the grocery store to get something before I got to her house. When I came out, but car wouldn't start. I called her and she asked what it was doing. I told her and she said, Oh, that sounds like the starter. She hopped in her car, stopped at autozone to get the part, and fixed it in the grocery store parking lot. Between that and her loving sports almost as much as I do, I knew she was a keeper.

We used to do minor work on our vehicles, even changed the starter and alternator on my "74" Fiat ( fix it again Tony ) with help. But when we got our "86" Camry and opened the hood, I looked at my wife ( partner back then ) and said, " We're done working on vehicles." We found a great mechanic and he took care of us for 25 years. Then he retired on our money! LOL!

With 55 lbs. of torque you won't have to worry about spilling your coffee. LOL.

My 2005 Corolla CE has a 1.8L engine, 125 lbs of torque and develops 130 HP.and weighs in at 2500 lbs. It will also slop soda out of cups in the center console cup holder if you're not very careful at launch and happily squeal and bunny hop it's tires for you (manual tranny).

My 2016 (?) Elio will have 55 lbs of torque, develop 55 HP and will weigh in at 1200 lbs. Given the close 1:1 proportionality between the cars I daresay you will have little trouble spilling your coffee.

...then I became curious of the Elio specs vs my (shudder) 1976 Chevette with the 3speed slush box: 52 HP, 70 ftlbs torque and a curb weight just under 2000 lbs. The automatic 0-60 time was 19 minutes, no, wait, 19 seconds. And the EPA hwy mileage (at 55!, no AC!) was 30. HAH! I was lucky to get 25 mpg at 55-60, ever. That car would not spill your coffee...unless you fell asleep while holding it and waiting for 60!

Dang, gotta correct myself, I was looking at the 1.4L and I had the 1.6L which was just over 2000lbs curb weight, 0-60 time of 15.6 seconds (we were much more patient then) and 60 HP @ 80 ft/lbs...but it was rear wheel drive...and no power steering or power brakes. Heck, flipping on the AC would slow you down just fine.
