Seems like a single-DIN head unit with flip out monitor and rear camera input would be a good way to go. That's what I'm planning to do.

I like this, but there seems to be a problem. The slot for the stereo in the ellio has rounded ends. it is not rectangular. In fact it looks larger.

If it is larger, perhaps something can be inserted in its place to provide a 1-DIN opening.

That really looks like the right idea. Do you think it will plug into the Elio dock?

My understanding is that the Elio "pill" radio (my description, not EM's) fits into a standard single-DIN opening. It only looks larger because I assume the oval fascia mounts on the surface, effectively hiding the rectangular single-DIN opening.

Whether an aftermarket head unit like that in my example will plug into the Elio wiring harness is another question. I suppose the aftermarket will eventually provide an adapter to bridge the head unit with the Elio's harness, or someone will eventually figure out how to do it and post the appropriate wiring diagram.

I hope this is true, but this picture from the configurator (courtesy Thomas Maule) show the sides of the stereo as being curved with a groove. The face is the same shape and size as the case.

If we knew the vertical size of the red dash it sits in, and measured the vertical size of the stereo in this picture, we would calculate the vertical size of the opening. The horizontal size could be calculated also.

Monday morning -- the configurator is working better, and they've cleaned up their color issues (mostly). Body colors look much more solid, wraps aren't blending as much. Carpet colors still look hinky. But it's progress.

Now if they only had info about the options they already know people want -- rear view cameras, storage bins& sacks, marker lights, cruise control, etc -- now that would be more helpful than plastic exterior trim pieces. What about color-coordinated rear covers? I bet those would be popular.

Oh, yeah, and an alternative dash! (hahahahahahahahah)

Wow, I haven't checked the configurator lately and wasn't aware that this info Was included. I stand corrected! That is definitely not a standard single-DIN opening, although it's still possible it has dimensions that would allow correct figment with some bracketing. Thanks for posting.

It would be contrary to EM's philosophy to make the radio non-standard especially considering that a radio is one of the most often swapped out pieces. That and Paul's lament about the kid that wants his dad to trade in his Ferrari because the radio wasn't up to current connectivity standards.

I believe the verbiage to focus on in the info is "Enhanced Trim Cosmetics". I think that trim would likely be the face plate with the oval cut out shown in the picture. The non-upgraded radio is likely just a normal 1-din rectangle with no enhancements such as the curve or hand hold to extract the upgraded radio.

I just cam from the configurator and the color for carpet can be chosen for $78.

But get this: According to the configurator, standard is NO CARPET.

I hope the configurator is wrong, but it may not be. You would expect black to be standard at no cost but it is not. Black carpet is an option at $78.

Perhaps gray is standard. Perhaps standard is whatever good deal they got that month. I can picture in my mind someone getting their Elio. They open the door and there is the carpet: shocking pink-----shag!

There must be an error. Who would sell a vehicle these days with no carpet.
