** The engine is spec designed to Elio's application...
The engine block is custom, but the pistons, connecting rods, valves, springs, lifters, flywheel, etc. may all be off the shelf
** All the body panels (inside & out) are spec designed...
The panels are entirely new, but the buttons, knobs, levers, handles and even the steering wheel are off the shelf or share tooling with existing designs.
** All the suspension pieces are are designed to Elio specs...
The upper A-arm is unique, but I think the lower A-arm, shocks, springs and linkages are all off the shelf
** The transmission will have to be custom calibrated to Elio's specs...
Maybe, but even if it does require a slight change in gearing ratios, that's a very easy single part tweak for AISIN.

I find it difficult to believe that anyone can honestly believe that EM hasn't taken the steps necessary to protect its product or hasn't done the market research to find justification for their production model .... just because we don't know about it doesn't mean it hasn't happened ... if you stick around long enough you will come to realize that EM has justifiably become very tight lipped about the info it releases .... the down side is it gives people with both well meaning and malicious intent gray areas where they fill in the gaps with whatever suits their agenda .... the fact of the matter is, Elio trikes will be built with mostly off the shelf parts .... from an economic standpoint, their sales distribution model is designed in a manner which standard vehicle manufactures can't come close to .... RU pretty well summed it up :

there is no new technology,
I also think the moat is bridgeable with units/ companies that are competitive in design- price will be a minor factor ( for folks who can afford it)- i.e. $10k from a "known" manufacturer Toyota, Honda.
I believe the real competition will be knock-offs from either India or China which could not only produce lookalikes, but undercut 6.8k. Sure the quality ain't there- just look at the scooter market being flooded and undercutting Vespa/Honda/Suzuki- BTW I've owned the Bergman 650- wonderful piece of technology (put another wheel, enclose it)
of course I think I paid 10k for it- about double the rest of the market but worth every penny. I'd pay 14-15k if Suzuki came out with their version of the E

Custom parts...off-the-self parts...shared parts from the "part's bin"...none of it even matters...just vocabulary that we disagree on!

What the current reality is ...Elio is now a public company that will be held to a higher standard...all the "free passes" are gone!

Hopefully Elio can build a fleet of operational prototypes in a specified time-frame...and validate their product specifications!

And more importantly...than raise enough capital to go into production...

I'd be ecstatic if Elio yearly output would be at least 50K units so they can stay in business!

I'm looking forward to owning an Elio whether it's $7K or $12K...

Let's go Elio...Focus on your goals!!!!

I sincerely hope, all who buy shares in EM, do so because they see the potential growth. Not because they want to "bully" EM into compromises simply for the sake of "profits". And for those who don't share the same vision...I hope EM handles it the way (I heard) GOOGLE recently did.

Hummm...Off-the-shelf?

** The complete frame structure is custom made to Elio specs...

** The engine is spec designed to Elio's application...

** All the body panels (inside & out) are spec designed...

** All the suspension pieces are are designed to Elio specs...

** The wiring harness will be custom made to Elio specs...

** All the glass will have be produced to Elio specs

** The transmission will have to be custom calibrated to Elio's specs...

** The wiper hardware will have to be designed to Elio specs...

** etc...etc...etc...

In my humble opinion...the Elio is a custom design in almost all aspects...not off- the-shelf any more than the norm in the automobile industry...
well, after manufactured and delivered, they will then put on shelves and resolve your concerns
Somehow, I get the impression you knew that
