Considering she hasn't hit a deer in any car that has had them, I'd say they must do something. The sound bugs the heck out of me though, so I don't have them on my car (and because I don't live in a high-deer zone like my parents do).

Maybe the local deer population are used to the sound, and then they are like "Oh, don't go near that sound. Your aunt Janey got hit by a Buick that sounded like that."

Another forum I'm on said he's seen more deer come at him when he had them on...

Didn't read the articles about the whistles. I've got one guy in my department that swears by them. Supposedly scares the deer into running away. Here's my problem with that. 99.9% of the deer I see driving to work early in the morning that aren't already a stain on the road are calmly munching, head down, on the grass near the shoulder of the highway. Why in the hell would I want to startle the critter with some whistle [assuming it would] and possibly make it take off in the wrong [towards me] directions. When a deer pops it's head up because of a loud vehicle, usually a 20-something with a fart can on his Honda that's passing me, that's when I get nervous.

I hate to break it to you, but deer whistles don't work.

Used them in Montana when I lived there and they seemed to work. Others that had them swore by them as well.
