Yes people need to take responsibility for their own actions. That includes people who sell loans.

Do you understand how insulting that is? It's one thing to make sure loan terms are understood, quite another to treat loan requestors as children who aren't capable of thinking for themselves and taking responsibility for their actions.

People who sell anything are under no obligation to make sure their customers understand what they are buying, unless the sellers flat out lie. If someone comes in to buy ginger and thinks it is a sweet candy, should the seller make sure they know what it is? If someone comes in to buy a 4x4 pickup, should the seller make sure they know what 4x4 is? If someone goes to a realtor for a two story house, is the seller obligated to make sure they know about accident rates involving stairs or how hard the gutters are to clean?

Or maybe we should trust be able to trust the professionals we go to for help to give honest advice. That salesman LIED. He lied because my wife was up front with how much she could afford and he wanted to make a sale. He gets his commission regardless of whether a single payment is ever made.
Your analogies don't work. To make them fit they should be: if somebody comes in to buy ginger and asks if if is a sweet candy, should the seller make sure they know what it is? If someone comes in to buy a 4x4 pickup and asks if it means they will be able to drive full speed in the snow, should the seller make sure they know what 4x4 is? If someone goes asks a realtor what are the downsides to owning a two story house, is the seller obligated to make sure they know about accident rates involving stairs or how hard the gutters are to clean?
