You said "PE does not seem to be well connected it that area."

Unfortunately the big auto makers are very well connected in that area.

Do anyone think Elio Motors is not a threat to them?
True, True! NO current automaker (BIG 3 OR foreign) could {or would even try} do do what PE is attempting.

Elio is not a threat to big auto new car sales. Elio is an & commuter vehicle and most will still need big autos. Elio is more of a threat to the used car market which may be a threat to big auto trade-ins.

EM has a legislative Team which seems both active and connected. They certainly have had to rally some political support from the non big auto and non big oil connected politicians.
It is sighted that 76% of the vehicles are driven with only one person in them. That means almost 76% of the vehicles on the road could be replaced with an Elio. Now if that is not a threat to the big car companies, than what is?

Unlikely. There are only so many that are going to drive an ELIO. Just like the smart dumb car only sells about 10K a year. I do think ELIO would do much better than Smart. If ELIO can deliver at a low cost and 80Mpg with no phony electric stuff they will sell, but not 76% of the market.

I read that stat to say at any given time 76% of vehicles have only one person in them, but I doubt that 76% of vehicles never have more than one person in them ever. My commuter car probably has only me 95% of the miles, only 1 passenger the other 4%, but 3 or 4 people 1% of the time, for that reason I expect to keep my car with 200k miles on it when I hopefully get my Elio.

I don't know the current sales #'s, but I think US vehicle sales are about 16-17 million this year and dipped to around 10 million at the lowest point in the recent recession. I'm sure someone can find the breakdown, but I'd guess at least 1 million subcompacts, 2 million compacts, and 2 million midsize sedans are sold each year. Light trucks, SUV's, and CUV's I think make up more than half of the sales. Elio just has to siphon off some of those small to midsize buyers to be successful.

Here's the data for cars sold by category in 2014 and year to date 2015. It's a lot of detail, but it basically looks like you're right: For all light cars and trucks, sales were 6.7 million units, and total cars accounted for half of that. Small cars obviously made up only a small percentage of that total -- haven't yet found the breakout for that split, but I'd be surprised if it were 20% of the cars, or .6 million -- in other words, about 10% of all vehicle sales or less.

They are not being replaced by the & Elio just not being driven for single driver daily commutes.
