It's only about looks (at least for me).
Isn't the E1C a partial coilover setup? I think it looks cool already.
Maybe a little paint and chrome, and it's up there with any looky lou hot rod.

Partial?? What's the difference between a partial and a full Coil over???
Nothing that I can think of; it's either coil over or it's not.
I mean, you can do different grade of coils, but if it's coil over, it's coil over.
I guess you could do a separate coil + a coil over shock, but you really don't gain all that much except a mess.
Or a coil over shock, and a leaf spring if the vehicle was big enough, but I don't see that happening on an Elio, or maybe torsion bar.
But there really isn't room for all of that gear.

For us non-gear heads....Other than looks, what's the big deal with diagonal coil-overs?

For me, I like coilovers that provide ride height adjustment as well as adjustments to spring preload, compression, and/or rebound dampening. You can get shock/spring setups that provide dampening adjustment, but usually not ride height too. Coilovers are usually more tuned to sporty driving instead of cushier comfort rides. Since I live and commute in an area with good road conditions and few potholes or speedbumps, I can run a lower ride height than stock and increase the compression and rebound for a sportier ride without being jarred to death. And if the ride if too harsh, dialing back the dampening only takes a few minutes to turn four little knobs. Makes it nice to be able to switch between commuting mode and hill country carving quickly.

Lets not forget the diagonal part. Even without the coil-over, the diagonal adds to the looks.
