The Elio Engine

For those of us that predate CC's as our measure of choice for engines. Having grown up with the Ford 289 and the GM 327s etc., I just did the conversion for the Elio power plant it is just under 55 ci. like 54.9++. My how the world has gotten smaller.

They should put that # 55 on the sides up front. Like they use to.

I would expect:
1. Start up and leak test
2. normal operation
3. envelope expansion
4. power output and specific fuel consumption
5. transient vibration tests
6. break down for ware checks
repeat

I would guess that long term operation would have a programmed cycle of idle, acceleration and cool down cycles to test the seals and clearance items.
Test to fail would happen far down the road. Possibly after production starts. Test to destruction usually happens to reduce structure and weight. It will likely be overbuilt for the first generation.

I sure enjoy getting the blogs via email,. I printed out the 4 engine discussions and asked my neighbor, who knows stuff about cars, unlike me, to read them. he likes what he read. on a side note my insurance lady is getting one as a result of my telling and directing her to website. I still believe, as many of us including mr elio probably that its human nature that when people see a few on their streets, not at a show which wouldn't attract certain people, the sales will catch like wildfire. another nice reason to have a number.

In the article, they say,...." In endurance tests on our test benches, new engines must show whether they can cope with the stress and strain they will face in everyday practice – in most cases, the test programs last between 50 and 2,500 hours and not only take place on our fully automatic test benches but also at external partners."
So, "between 50 and 2,500 hours" = from 2 days to 3 months.

And they mention using "oil analysis" to chart wear. This and other tests can be very accurate in predicting "end of life" for individual components.
