I received an email response from EM saying that there will be scheduled ride and drive tours around the country once the prototypes are built....for all to drive not just reservation holders. I assume the same locations that are on the current schedule. There will also be test drive Elio's at the planned Elio Store locations....after production begins.

Hi gang,

I've seen on the EM Facebook page where EM will reply in a post about "... we are planning a series of ride and drive events for our reservation holders around the start time of production".

I'm guessing they will be at the plant in Shreveport... Anybody have any information on such events?
I understood these ride and drive events are going to be held around the country like the current events but for reservation holders only. I am assuming I will be making a trip to Portland for it. :) Z

I understand your concerns. This vehicle is definitly not as heavy as other cars. In some respects it might not be as safe, such as in a side collision, getting hit from the side by a large vehicle at say 50 mph. Certainly a Crown Vic or a Subaru would be a better choice for a male teen to drive, agreed.

All that said, I respectfully disagree that the Elio is a dangerous vehicle. Not-as-safe as some other vehicles in certain situations, yes. But so is a motorcycle, so is a Can-Am, etc. The Elio isn't meant to be a vehicle that anyone can drive in any condition and survive any kind of crash. People get hurt all the time in normal-sized vehicles.

I hope we can agree to disagree, and continue to be friends on here. I have a teen-age daughter, and while girls don't usually take the risks that boys take, I wouldn't let my daughter drive an Elio on the interstate, just like I wouldn't let her drive a motorcycle on the interstate, until after she took a special safety class and had 1 yr experience driving it often. This is why certain states have a law that says people under 18 or under 21 must wear a helmet and those over 21 or 18 don't need a helment. Teens' judgement is not good, their brains are still developing, etc. We're probably agreeing somewhat on this. :-)

My questions about impact protection are actually everything but a side impact as actually from a side impact point of view the Elio should be about as safe as any other vehicle and even safer in some circumstances. The major item protecting occupants from a t-bone or side impact in most vehicles is a well designed reinforced door and door frame. On the right side of the Elio there is no door just a complete welded roll cage which should be much stronger than any door. On the left side is a door which should have all the standard reinforcing bars as any other vehicle door and should hold up the same way as any other car. Also in the case of a side impact the light weight and three wheel setup actually help the Elio as vehicles like this tend to spin away from a side impact accident which helps dissipate impact forces instead of being absorbed by the structure like in a heavier four wheel vehicle.

Probably for the same reasons as you. I bought it because it looks like a blast to drive for primarily ME and maybe my wife. I also love the concept and want to support an American auto company trying to succeed again. The high mpg and price is nice but is down the list. I didn't realize I had to ask you or the board for permission to spend my own money. If you had a 17 year old son that you recognize is a crappy driver at this stage of his life would you put him in a car like this? Last year I had a PRO4X 6-speed Xterra and it was obvious from teaching him it was too much car for him at this stage - so I sold it and bought a better car for him to learn on. Earlier on this thread I described this car as dangerous which was a poor choice of words. It would have been better to say it was not as safe as a regular car.

Not sure why you unleashed the snarky NASA rocket scientist comment though - but it did make me laugh.

It seems even those of us that are all in here have to be 100 percent drinking the Elio kool aid around here or they will be run out by the fanatics. We sure can't say anything that can be construed to criticize EM even if I like the car... I don't ever drink the kool aid and prefer to do my own thinking, thank you . It is pretty obvious that I need to stop posting here.

Hi Craig; I don't know about the guy asking the dumb question but I truly wish we had some way to detect all those in a traffic pattern involved in any way with a cell phone of any other device not contributing to the driver's driving awareness. I'm working on a unidirectional emf pulse generator just powerful enough to reach a couple of blocks or so. LOL
For the electronically challenged ; EMF stands for electro motive force better known as voltage and the short name for my device is "Pulse Generator" and the unidirectional is pure antenna wave propagation theory.
