Anyone can get a prototype built without a lot of money. Didn't Sondors get something like a million dollars from his crowdfunding? It can't be hard to get a prototype built for a million. How many hot rod or prototype shops are there that do just that sort of thing? He's going to need quite a bit more money to finalize the design and make it manufacturable. And then need a lot more money to actually build it in volume.
I guess Elio could not do it for that sum.

Too much money spent on engine development and marketing a product, touted as being almost ready for delivery.
Granted, the motor at this next link is a Permanent Magnet Motor and not a AC Synchronous Electric Motor or a Hub Motor.
But I thought it would be fun just for a very general idea of motor prices...

The compact package includes the controller but not the battery pack, but to be fair, the price of the exclusive Elio engine (whatever that may be) doesn't include the tranny or the rest of the components made necessary by the ICE under the Elio hood.

"Protean Drive® is a fully-integrated, direct-drive solution that combines in-wheel motors with an integrated inverter, control electronics and software – no separate large, heavy and costly inverter is required." The unit weighs 68lbs. Sondors is not going to have to spend millions on motor and system development.

Hands down a really good looking 3wheeler. Wider stance and side to side seating gives it a feeling of a regular car that does not necessitate some adjustments compared to an ELIO. I'm hoping that the 100 mile version final price will still be affordable.
One of the things I really like about the Elio is the Formula 1 cockpit.

I want to adjust to having both elbows hanging on the windowsill.

From Vanderhall - " Hall spent several years experimenting with multiple layouts to determine which would work best, and therefore, provide the greatest driving experience for the consumer. Everything from frame geometry to power plants to suspension were looked at and if something looked viable, it was tried out. It was this dedication to experimentation that ensured that the final production vehicle would not only be received by the public, but embraced. The first three prototypes from 2010 to late 2011 focused on a rear-wheel drive system and a single seat design. Multiple engine types were tried but the right combination of power and torque wasn’t quite right. The first real fundamental change came in 2012, when prototype number four was switched to front-wheel drive and things changed dramatically from there. Handling and stability increased substantially and gave a dramatically different feel to the Vanderhall roadster. Although some purists and diehard gear heads may say that nothing that is front-wheel drive can be fun and exhilarating, we beg to differ. With the increased traction and the 70/30 weight distribution, stability and handling now approached that of most sports cars: little understeer and an almost neutral handling."
I have never drove or designed a Tadpole, so I can only go by what others say.
