They can now put the B-52s completely indoors... something I would have loved during a winter exercise in Minot once upon a time ago.

F-15 C/D, B-52, A-10, B-52, ICBM.... Still a maintainer (though a bit higher up than I was)
I lived in Minot, ND for some time. Also Rapid City, SD during the flood. Too cold for me.

I think that may indeed at least partially happen. Investors usually invest based on certain benchmarks. Not sure if 40K is one of those benchmarks, but it's very possible.
If an investor uses the magic 40k as a time to "jump in", he/she must have cash to burn, of the 40k we only know for sure the 13k(?) 1k all ins, We know of multiple "buyers" even at the 1k, an investor should eliminate anyone who wants in ( i.e. puts a $100 "risk" as a want in), For P.R. 40k is indeed a benchmark number, sounds good, but I think they're smart enough to "run the numbers"

We'll play the hypothetical one more time: 60,0000 units @ 1K net profit = 60,000,000.
that's for Elio company. Each of the big three buys 20k CC's @ 2,400 per credit = 60k
x 2,400 = 144,000,000, this is for the share holders. Not a bad ROI after one year of
production. The risk/reward potential is significant.............

40,000 orders x 6,800 = 272,000,000 and that is a lot closer to breaking even.
That might be a tipping point for someone with a vision.
Then every owner that goes out the door becomes an Elio salesman whether they want to be or not.
Not sure why folks keep missing that the 40k will not buy 40k cars. "Many" folks went in hedging their bet ( we don't know who/how many till the total place on line is available), but of those we do know 1k all in they will have a $500 "credit", on the other side, the money will be made in the extras, just like the big boys. A "few" buying that super computer for 2k for example- for some a must have. Me. the OTD price will have to include- pop-out rear windows, louvered rear )to cut the crap about no rear window, M.C fenders, upgrade radio, inside lights, so I'm figuring my OTD about 12k.

There are plenty of ways for EM to make money besides the base vehicle profit margin. Besides the obvious options and aftermarket accessories EM will also make money from everyone who chooses to use one of their pre-arranged financing deals be it traditional or credit card based financing. Also all OEM replacement parts used for vehicle mechanical and collision repair will have to come directly from EM thus providing yet another source of revenue. I am sure EM will also license their name, logo, and vehicle likeness for all kinds of official merchandise.

None of that even takes into account what could happen if/when EM is able to get the CAFE credit standards amended to include autocycle vehicles. According to EM estimates that could actually provide much more profit per base vehicle than EM has currently planned for. Getting this done would even allow EM to use CAFE credit payments to subsidize the vehicle's base price in order to keep sales levels higher as EM would have a big incentive to maximize the number of vehicles they produce and sell.

Well what will happen is that anyone who says "no, I don't want it", there will be plenty of people willing to buy that out. EM also has to supply their Fleet sales which will get quite lively once the production materializes. Once all 1year reservations that connect are done, EM can just choose to call Year1 done and now do year1.5 or year2 if it suits them. Even so, many more people are likely to get on board for as long as the $6800 price tag stays in the queue.
I know at least 10 people personally that didn't put 100 down, but will buy out now if it was out there for sale. Their reasons not at all based on any cool factor at all. It's economic for them.

Taking a wild guess here maybe 13-14,000 are $1000

I recall, that when they close the first production 1 yr?, they will then generate a "master list "of ALL folks in line i.e. even the $100 want-ins, will "see" their place in line ( not sure if and when it will be public), or they just send out individual email notifications for each of us to see our own spot and approx date
