For every volume of space there is is a level that will nicely fill it. If the volume goes above that point it starts getting painful. The volume in a function of the amount of air that the speakers move.
The larger the speaker, the more air it will move. Air has mass, therefore it takes more power to move more mass.
That's why they have lots of speakers at concerts. The other issue is to use different amps to push sound at different frequencies through different speakers.
I used to work with a band. We had a 1500 watt tri-amped system. 20 to 200 on the lows, 200 to 2000 on the mids, and 2000 an up on the horns. Gave a real nice clean sound and would fill most any room. Even doing Free Bird.

Reminds me of how when Kiss first started, they built their rep by having lots 'n lots 'n lots of speakers at their shows. Turns out they had to be careful with the lighting so people wouldn't see that the speaker boxes were empty. Just for show.

Somehow I don't think there will be room in an Elio for a bi-amped or tri-amped system. Plus, with the small interior I should think one high quality amp should do nicely.

Correct. In fact, a sealed speaker box "pulls" the extended speaker back in place due to the slight vacuum created. Where a 10" Sub should have 1.5 cubic feet of air in a ported box, a sealed box only needs 1 cubic foot. I did learn something in that audio class Circuit City put me through. We had a guy with a Geo Storm with 4 10" Subs in back with a good quality 50 watt amp that outdid all the super high amp stereos. How? Correctly sized boxes and a true 50 watts. Car audio isn't regulated (it wasn't at the time at least) so manufacturers could claim anything they wanted.

Car speakers are typically 4 ohms... Ohm's law says Power= Current times voltage. All systems are 12 volts... R= i/E. R is resistance which is 4 ohms, E=12 Volts. So, E=48 amps. Power= 48 amps X 12V which = 576 Watts. It takes 10 times the power to double the perceived sound... So, my 576 Watt system will only appear twice as loud as a 57.6 Watt system which is only twice as loud as a 5.76 Watt system...

Why, other than my demented engineer neediness did I say all that? Don't get hung up on wattage... sure, capacitors can amp that up but they can't sustain the high pressure for anything other that short bursts which is why you'll hear ghetto booming with horrible sound quality other than those quick bursts.
Stereos have come a LOOOOOOOOONG way since stock systems were always horrible. They ALL sound pretty decent now (even though the acoustics of cars is really bad) which is a great thing for Elio. Not only has MTX turned into a higher end audio component supplier, even their worst quality items are pretty friggin good. The Elio, being so small and probably a decently quiet vehicle with most road noise being generated away from the body, should have good acoustics and won't require much to have a decent stereo.

Done. Thanks for reading... or skipping to the end. I can't wait to get my Elio. #3,898 can't get here soon enough!

Interesting thought. With a outriggers holding the front wheels away from the body maybe it will reduce road noise. Cool!

p.s. Is it just a coincidence that an ad for McIntosh amps showed up near the top of this page in the forum?

My screen shows a Crutchfield stereo ad. I guess the computer running this forum monitors the titles and injects a related advertisement.

I guess we would see related ads for shocks if the title was :"shocks" .
I guess we would see related ads for tires if the title was "tires".

Perhaps this should be tried.

Would we see ads for Trojans if the title was "contraception"?
