For a second there I thought you were replying to the post immediately before yours and you were calling the hand brake on the Elio, the "Elio Collective".

Note: the collective is one of the controls on a helicopter that just happens to use a handle similar to a hand brake lever.

For myself I will be looking for a luggage rack that attaches to the trunk lid

Problem is the trunk lid is made of plastic and is designed for light weight, not structural rigidity. I'd be very cautious about that. How strong are the hinges and the latch? My guess -- not very. Mounting a suction-cup based rack on the sloping rear roof above the trunk lid might work better, but there's still no good way to physically secure it to the car itself that I can see. I suppose if you got the lever-actuated suction cups you might pull enough vacuum so the thing would stay put, but I sure wouldn't put anything of value on it (or in it, if you mounted a case that way) ... every time the car hits a bad bump, you'd be putting the whole force on a flimsy latch ... not my idea of secure.

Maybe someone could design some external Egg shaped pods that a person could attach toward the back of the Elio for extra storage. Place them about the same area as the engines on an A10 Thunderbolt.

The issue I see with the Elio pulling a trailer is the amount of rubber on the ground at the rear. With 1 tire I can see it only being able to handle a small light weight trailer. It's not just about it's power abilities, it's also about the ability to handle the load when it pushes on the car.

As long as there are motorcycles that can safely tow trailers, and there are, I see no problems towing with an Elio...of course, it would have to be a light weight trailer, probably not more than about 300-400 lbs...

Not picking a fight.
Those motorcycles don't have front wheel drive.
That might be a factor.
Especially when 2/3 of the weight is on the front wheels.
As compared to weight distribution on a two wheeled bike.
Just a thought.

I fear I must agree with you re: the front wheel drive and the weight distribution. BUT, as someone noted earlier in the thread, perhaps the solution is to use a trailer with its own brakes that are linked to the brake system of the Elio, even if that linkage is just a splice into the electrical line leading to the Elio's brake lights. I'm reminded of how it was the invention of air brakes that finally made train travel safe, since the braking force was distributed along the length of the train, rather than concentrated on the engine.

In the end, we'll have to wait for someone to actually get a production Elio and experiment to see if he/she can develop a system that is safe under most conditions.
