Good question, who would want to be in a tube going 1k mph? Well, someone has to do it, I guess!
Quite a few Americans would!

I sat in the P4 and could see the front wheels. Should not be a problem.I wonder how many people will forget about the outrigger front wheels and accidentally clip off part of their suspension on a protective barrier at the gas station . Hope they are easy to see from the drivers seat and not too out-of-sight, out-of-mind.
Studded snow tires should cure this.Anyone thinking the traction of the rear tire is less important than the front has not tried snow and ice with bad rear traction on a front wheel drive. Without good lateral traction on the back you'll find yourself spinning around on even light curves. With only one tire to grip on the back this might bethe Achile's heel of the Elio in snow and ice. A new snow tire design might be needed.
Can't believe snow's much of a problem in San DiegoAs long as the wheel covers are easy to remove, should be easy to remove covers, drive over chains or snow treads, then attach the chains and some sort of ski to the back tire. Speed is not an issue driving in heavy snow, so who need wheel covers. Instant snowmobile.
SHADE bring SHADE! and lot's and lot's of water but always a good time, 3 of my buds and I go every year.Shucks... Just take her over to the Salt Flats at Wendover, UT... I think the speed limit is er... oh yeah....

Couple of things to remember tho...
1. Good pair of Polarizing UV protected sunglasses are a must (You can go "snow blind" looking at the salt in the sun)
2. Make darn sure you've washed ALL of the salt off the vehicle when you're done!
Walaw- is that Polish? When I drive up to the $ machine at my bank in my SUV, the SUV is up so high I have to lean way out of the window (blood rushing to my head) or pull up a little and open the door and walk back to use it. I have done both. That may sound a little crazy but non the less. Now for me, the Elio will be better because of the wheels being out past the body. You are all ready far enough away from the machine to open the door. Just swing around, sit on the edge of the seat and walaw, a fist full of cash.
I have to admit, I rarely see a pot hole in the middle of the lane. If there is one, it is the width of the lane. The center of the lane is the smoothest part, and yes the slickest. Fronts are for braking. I'm not worried about hitting a pot hole with the rear wheel.
EDIT:Spelling correction
I have done the same thing. I am far more likely to see pot holes in town than on I-5. But there is a lot of big rig tire remains to watch out for on I-5. :-) Zevery since reading this and other related post I've paid much more attention to road conditions by looking for times I'd have to worry about the single rear of an Elio .... bottom line, the only times I've seen road conditions that concerned me involved chunks of rubber from blown/separated big rig tires .... pot holes in the middle of the lane simply haven't been an issue .... I know by writing this I'm dooming myself to have problems but from what I've seen so far, I don't expect it to be a major issue

KKidd, eelcome to the forum. Glad you joined this friendly helpful group of Elio fans.I would be surprised if Tire Rack does not have some brand, model and/or size of winter tire that will clear and work on the Elio. Snows are built purposely narrower than A/S and summers, and I know they aren't going to re-invent the wheel. Relative to a comment way back about the rear wheel running in an unclean area of the lane, I have seen lots of tire punctures. A huge majority of them are rear tires. The nail, screw or other lies flat on the road and when your front tire runs it over it kicks up and hits the rear just so. I'm expecting this to be a non-issue on an Elio.
On the way back from the Elio road show in Birmingham, AL we saw an aluminum ladder in the middle of one of the lanes on the interstate. Four wheel cars could drive over it fine, due to it's positioning. With an Elio, it might have caused the exhaust system to tear off, and possibly an accident once it hit the rear wheel. With a motorcycle, once dark, it could be fatal.every since reading this and other related post I've paid much more attention to road conditions by looking for times I'd have to worry about the single rear of an Elio .... bottom line, the only times I've seen road conditions that concerned me involved chunks of rubber from blown/separated big rig tires .... pot holes in the middle of the lane simply haven't been an issue ....
