WOW! Talk about "crumple zones". It's a video of a Porsche 914 at the Pike's Peak race, and he bites it but good! I got an engine out of a 914 that had a similar crash...hit a bluff at highway speeds and then rolled. The owner did break his leg in the crash, but survived. When I saw the condition of the 914 in this video, it reminded me of one of my donor cars.

Well, for a 'nice one' that's been fully restored, probably in the 15k to 20k range. Better than 30k for an original 914-6 (rare!) Rust is the enemy of these little cars, so it's best to find one that grew up in CA or the desert southwest, and the 2.0L engine is the one to have. All three of mine have the 2.0L's, but two of them need some new metal welded in to make them roadworthy ('74 and '75), but my '73 was beefed up to accept a V8...it's getting a 3.3L Subaru flat 6 (SVX) once the new garage is built.

Here's a very nice example on Ebay setting at a little above 4k. Looks real clean, but if you do decide to pull the trigger on one, go to a Porsche 914 forum (Club914.com) and see if you can talk one of the members that's near it's location for an inspection. Good folks, and they jump at the chance to help out a fellow 914 enthusiast/future owner.

Wow , that crash could have been so much worse . Over the side of the Hill Climb and I doubt he would be walking away .

Yeah, you go over the steep side and it could've been a very bad day for that driver for sure....roll cage, or not. What still amazes me about the 914's is how survivable front and rear impacts are. Everything from just rear of the front wheels is empty space (mid-engine), and same for the rear trunk area. There's stories from a 914 forum of a guy and his friend getting a head-on from a drunk driver in a Grand National. Both survived with some fairly serious injuries, but I doubt any other vehicle, especially of this size, would have ended so well for the occupants.

Notice the chair the car crashed into. Someone could have been sitting there or possibly was. I also noticed people refusing to get out of the road despite the repeated urging. Racing is serious and not just the drivers can get hurt. People should take it seriously.

Yes, I still have it. It is a 1971, 1.7 Liter 4 cylinder. The motor is being upgrade to 1.9 Liter. We put the heads on it tonight but still have one rocker arm to go. I also have a side shifter transmission to put in it, replacing the tail shifter transmission. I have too many cars. My garage runneth over.

I also have a 1970 Opel GT. It has headlights that flip over, rotating from side to side. They are mechanically operated by a lever on the console that would to be too hard for a woman to operate. The mechanism will lock the headlights in either up or down. The first movement of the lever will unlock them, and the last movement of the lever (at the end of its travel) will lock them in the other position. I took them all apart and got them to working correctly, What an overly complicated piece of excrement! It is proof that German engineers use drugs. They could have used a simple vacuum diaphragm motor. But NOOOOOO. They are German engineers. They will do it the hard way or they will not do it at all.

People who stand on the track believe they can get out of the way and they probably can. However, when a driver suddenly sees someone on the track they may be startled and suddenly brake or change steering and crash. The better racer they are, the closer they are to the limits of traction plus their senses are heightened and they can over react.
