There usually is because the good teams will pull starters to "save them and the risk of them getting hurt in a nothing game"; plus it give the 2nd and 3rd string players a chance to "shine" :victorious:

Down the stretch they come, NFL fans.

Three games left in the regular season, and as usual a lot to be decided.

Teams that are a virtual or actual lock for the playoffs:
  • Dallas - Giants have beaten them twice, but nobody else has. We'll see how they finish. Romo is waiting in the wings. Cowboys have locked a playoff berth; will they get the top seed in the NFC? Not sure, but probably. What needs to happen for Romo to replace Prescott? Two more games of really bad play by Prescott. Otherwise, he's starting. Now in a playoff game, if it's 10-0 and Dallas is losing, Romo might come in to start the 2nd half. :-)
  • New England - hard to believe that they will lose any more regular season games. They have the best point differential and are 2nd in points allowed, so yeah.. no Gronkowski? No problem.
  • Seattle - has locked up the division. Seattle's defense is looking good. Their division is NOT looking good, so it's hard to tell if Seattle is a very good team or an above avg team. They have beaten the Patriots and Falcons, but have lost to the Rams and Saints. It's a long season, most every team has a stinker game at least once.
  • Detroit - yes, Detroit! Crazy isn't it? They have a tough 3-game stretch left: @ Giants, @ Dallas, and Green Bay. They will probably win 1 of those games, and 10 wins gets them a division crown and if not that, into the tournament as a wildcard.
Teams that are probably going to make the playoffs:
  • Kansas City - yes, they lead the division right now. But games remaining are: Tennessee, Denver, and @ Chargers. See below for Oakland's schedule, as KC and Oak have the same record right now. KC does own the tiebreaker. KC is rolling along nicely, winning last 3 and 8 of last 9, and though they lost LB Derrick Johnson to injury for the season, hopefully the defense will continue to be strong. I see Justin Houston is questionable with a sore knee for Sunday. If he doesn't play... could be a very close game with Tenn.
  • Oakland - they are sliding, Derek Carr's right pinky is causing problems for the offense. @ Chargers, Colts, and @ Broncos. Next two games will be warm weather / in a dome, so hopefully his finger will cooperate. Their defense is not going to carry them, so they will go as their offense goes.
  • Pittsburgh - they are on a roll, winning the last 4, and finish with @ Cinc, Balt, Cleveland. If they beat Balt, Pitt wins the division.
  • Atlanta - have a favorable remaining schedule, if they win 2 of 3, 10 wins gets them in even if they don't win the division.
  • Tampa Bay - they have been playing very well lately, winning their last 5 which includes wins at KC and home with Seattle. @ Dall, @ NO and Carolina spells 2 probable wins, and again 10 wins in the NFC probably gets you a playoff berth.
  • Tennessee - they are coming on strong, and if they especially beat KC tomorrow, they are prob going to win the AFC South, and be an actual threat to win a playoff game
  • NY Giants - they have 9 wins now, and 10 wins in the NFC gets you into the tournament.
Teams that control their own destiny but STILL might not get in:
  • Denver - QB play is really really lacking. Before the season started, experts sure were ok with Denver being able to win with rookie QBs, but the media's story changed about halfway thru the season. If Denver wins their last 3 games... NE, @ KC, Oakland ... they will have 11 wins and that will get them in the tournament. But THAT, my friends, is probably the toughest 3-game schedule remaining of the 32 NFL teams.
  • Green Bay - as it's been the last 3 years, as Aaron Rodgers goes, so go the Packers, and Rodgers has a bad hammy and then hurt the other leg's calf last week, compensating for the bad hammy. If he becomes immobile or gets hurt, GB may not win any of their remaining games: @ Chi, Minn, @ Det.
  • Miami - having won 7 of last 8, the only good team in that stretch was Pitt. AAAaaaand... starting QB Tannehill is hurt. Will their backup QB Matt Moore lead them to win 2 of last 3: @ Jets, @ Bills, Patriots? Not likely, but that's WHY they PLAY the GAMES.
Teams that I feel are just not playoff-quality teams, but have a chance to get in should a miracle happen:
  • Houston - they do have wins against KC, Tenn and Det, and all losses but 1 are to good teams. They do have a chance to make it, but QB Osweiler has been less-than-stellar. Remaining schedule seems favorable, but I don't see their defense carrying them to 10 wins, and I do see Tenn winning the division. Can Houston win their division? They sure could, but my spidey sense is tingling.
  • Minnesota - after starting 5-0, they've gone 2-6. Yes, Adrian Peterson may play. Can he give them a lift and help the offense to win their last 3? It's possible, but not likely.

Let me add just a minor update; Seattle won on Thurs over the Rams Seattle 24 Rams 3
Detroit knocked us out of the #2 seed last week and took it over; so we're waiting to see what happens on Sunday when they play the giants.
Their record is 9-4-0 while Seattle is at 9-4-1
