Personally, I wouldn't want to force or try to change anyone about the Elio (If they felt it unsafe or really didn't like it), not even a spouse. I can't see why the one who wants it wouldn't get it for there single driving experience. After all, that's pretty much what the Elio is for anyway, even though it can hold 2.

Now if your partner won't let you buy one for yourself (and the money is there), then I would say you got bigger problems that needs addressed.

Reminds me of a TV commercial with a lady laying out on a new comfortable mattress and the husband walks in with some outrageous news. The woman rolls over with the most satisfied look on her face and says "I'm comfortable with that, Dear".
Try a new mattress or .... a pool boy.
