Elio Motors Momentum v89

Elio Motors: A Platform for the Future, Today
Some of our supplier partners have operations in Troy, Mich., a suburb six miles north of Detroit’s northern border. Entering Troy, you’ll see signs with the city’s motto – “The City of Tomorrow, Today.” Troy has positioned itself as a community built for the future, yet it still offers a great place to live right now. In a way, that’s how we think of Elio Motors. We are a vehicle platform for the future, but we are ready to make a difference in the world, right now.
New Technology, Industry Concepts Destined for Greatness
Think for a moment about some of the headlines you see coming out of CES or the North American International Auto Show. Electric Vehicles, Hybrids, Autonomous vehicles. These futuristic technologies grab a lion’s share of the media coverage. But, in reality, these technologies are still decades away from becoming ubiquitous. We know how challenging it is to go from a great idea to production. While we are close to breaking through, autonomous vehicles could face at least a decade of challenges.
We’re big fans of autonomous vehicles, EVs and hybrids. After all, we’re an engineering-driven company fascinated by the latest tech gadgets.
But, we’re also trying to change the world right now. For our launch, it was important to develop a vehicle that can change the world using today’s technology. Today, an internal combustion engine makes the most sense.
Why? Because today there are more than 265 million light-duty Vehicles in Operation (VIO) on American roads today, according to Experian Automotive. These vehicles all are operated by human beings and nearly all run on an Internal Combustion Engines.
These vehicles are going to be with us for a very long time. In 2016, only 8 million vehicles were taken out of circulation (i.e., sent to the junk yard), but another 17 million were produced and sold. So, even though there are volumes of media coverage about autonomous vehicles, EVs and hybrids, the percentage of gas-powered vehicles on American roads actually grew in 2016.
Opportunity for Elio
How does this impact Elio Motors? The switch to autonomous vehicles is likely to follow a similar adoption curve to EVs and hybrids. They will run into several hurdles before they are mainstream – technology, infrastructure and perhaps even consumer demand – to name a few. Our quest is to make something people WANT to drive, because we know most people still LIKE to drive.
If the industry is going to keep producing vehicles with internal combustion engines driven by real people, why not develop one that is affordable, fun to drive and gets out-of-this-world mileage?
As for the future? Think of our vehicle as a platform to which new technologies can be easily adapted. Yes, we are designed as gas-powered today. But, we’re in synch with the goals automakers have for EVs and hybrids, too – better for the environment, save owners on fueling costs, reduce dependence on foreign oil. We applaud these efforts. And, as technologies change, we feel we are in a good position with our current vehicle platform to change with them. Autonomous vehicles? Alternative fuels like compressed natural gas, hydrogen, electric? The options are limitless!
