Actually, I believe Baltimore drafted Elway. He stated he'd play baseball before playing for them, and ended up being traded to Denver. He was almost a Yankee!!
Good point Bert. I think ESPN has a 30 for 30 show, "From Elway to Marino", that does a great job of explaining the Elway situation in 1983, and how the draft went in the first round, all the players that were taken and why, and things from Elway's agent's point of view. That show does go into how Elway played minor league ball that summer after the draft, and Steinbrener was stoked that Elway might be playing outfield for the Yankees. Elway was one hell of an athlete. I'm pretty sure the show documented why Elway didn't wanna play for Baltimore Colts, but I don't remember specifics, was it the owner?
