The latest HUD (heads up display) technology is being shown at CES this week. The question that needs to be answered: is this technology safe to use? Is it too distracting? People have had accidents as they were distracted by checking the time on their car clock or changing a cd, much less looking at all the data display available from HUD.

Sure, but if you're looking at a display on the windshield, you're not looking through the windshield as is intended.
Come on, you know the intent. At least people with their speed on a HUD don't have to look down at their speedometer to check their speed. Sure, in a perfect world, we would never look away from the road but if something can be accomplished a smidgeon safer, why not? Of course, someone will be putting movies on their windshield and killing a schoolbus full of kids...

That's the key. I'm all for this, don't mistake my response. It's just that we know where things like this can lead.
You know I find it interesting. I know there is a name for this, I read it just today. But there is a phenomenon out there that leads to distracted driving. I use my GPS constantly. Even to places I know how to get. I use the ETA feature as well as it helps if there are any accidents. However, I find myself glancing over at the device more often than I need to. I'm not sure why this is, and I need to stop, but I still do it. So having a HUD with a GPS map on the windshield... just seems like it can lead to other things. IMO.

Good point. I use Waze (Google's social version of Google Maps) on my commute. It's designed for commuting back and forth. You can update the map as you go along. A three finger swipe brings up voice command which lets you report vehicles on the side of the road, congestion, etc. But, it still takes attention away from driving although briefly.

On a related note, how often do you think your phone vibrated so you check it to find that it didn't? That's the phantom vibration phenomenon...

Or how many times has your stomach churned leading you to check the phone on your hip only to realize the phone is not on your hip.

Or. Just me...?

I simply have my iPhone 6+ mounted on top of the dashboard, it's actually larger than the Navdi, and far more capable. It's annoying when the suction cup and glue lets loose and that coiled power cable acts as a spring. ZOOM![

I was thinking about how a status symbol of today is those cell phones that everyone has clipped onto their belt or purse. I can't afford one. So I'm wearing my garage door opener.
