The Elio website says that they don't have numbers for the cost of shipping the car to buyers, but expect it to be half of what major car companies charge. So what do major car companies charge?

I was just running some rough numbers on what it would cost to fly to Shrevesport and drive home. The shuttle from Fort Collins to DIA, 7 hour flight to Shrevesport (by way of Atlanta, WTF?), motel at destination, motel about halfway through the 16 hour, 1000 mile drive, gas for said 1000 mile drive, and food for three days comes in close to $500.

Jerome mentioned that they are trying to set up an arrangement with casino(s) to comp Elio buyers (in the hopes that they'll spend it on chips and booze), and perhaps some, if possible, reduction of destination charges, Yes we know there is no destination at the factory, but from what I have gleaned is that the costs have to averaged to cover shipping all over the country.(which is SOP) for car manufacturers- EM as known, does not conform to SOP.!!!
To be sure EM is aware, that many first year's buyers are very interested in picking up their unit, and touring the factory.
Where exactly I'm not sure, but there have been many threads "discussing" this, as is the case with most info here, very little is etched in stone.

As you can imagine shipping costs vary by size, weight, distance, etc... You can visit uship.com and see what is being charged for shipping various types of vehicles, or other objects, varying distances for an idea of what it may cost for you.

As has been mentioned the cost difference could also be influenced any deals EM makes for shipping and/or for expenses relating to pickup at the Shreveport plant.

There are also volume discounts for shippers; just like in UPS it is one price for a one off retail shipped item, and discounted prices for regular daily customers. Shipping vehicles has a whole separate structure for pricing volume vs. a one off ship. It averages the truck freight prices, and train volume with shipments to regular distribution terminals. It also takes into account size and weight of the vehicles.

Why would it be half? It takes up the same space, gets transported the same way, and goes the same distance. $750 is what I saw that Jerome said months ago.

We haven't contracted with a carrier as of yet, but we expect the freight costs to be 1/2 or more less than the major manufacturers. They actually make a profit on freight. We don't intend on profiting from shipping the vehicle to your area!

I'm considering a flatbed trailer from San Antonio to/from the Shreveport. looks like a 6' x 12' trailer would work

While I was in Jacksonville, a fellow was measuring to see too if he could trailer his "&", don't remember the exact dimensions but I think the machine was just south of 5' -so I think you'll be o.k., as soon as i post this there are folks out there that jump into their rolodex and will put the actual measurement on line - don't know how but they got this stuff down to a science!!
