For our perspective of history we can notice that two things go together, the development of road and highway systems in parallel to Automotive suspensions and power.
The most early vehicles were encountering very rough aggregate materials and sometime cobbled roadways. Very tall, spoke wheels typical for the time.
Then later graded and tended, even sometimes sealed roads, concrete or flattened tiles. A lot of this inside large and growing cities. With new stamping processes, smaller balloon tire and steel rims.
And around 1955 I see a change that seems to match the developing highways between highly populated areas. Wheels are again tall, but more optimized for faster speedways and long travel distances. Full cabins with wipers and temperature controls have become available as well. Engine power and vehicle top speeds have also increased. An interest in crash protection appears to develop.
You may notice that in the following posting starting in 1955.Diversification seem more prevalent, some vehicle seem to be intended for inter-city travel and some for more intra-city uses.
