Mexico City: One man's mission to introduce electric cars
"Hector Ruiz has made it his mission to convert old cars in Mexico City to run on electricity.
But with over five million vehicles in the city, he has a long way to go to have an impact on air pollution."

Notice the size of the vehicle, a VW Beetle. Mexico City has a pollution problem. Mexico has many beaters. Hector's goal is to take highly polluting cars out of circulation, just like Elio's. Why upgrade a vehicle that could be loaded with end-of-life parts? Just buy an Elio.

HELLO EXPORTS!

HELLO EXPORTS!
First we need to meet domestic demand.
That means first produce 65K+ for domestic consumption, then we can talk export.

In Mexico:
VW UP! 2 door - $159,990 ($8,134 USD)
VW UP! 4 door - $179,990 ($9,150 USD)
VW Gol - $171,900 ($8,730 USD)
Fiat Mobi - $152,900 ($7,773 USD)
Toyota Avanza - $203,700 ($10,356 USD)
Renault Logan - $178,000 ($9,049 USD)
Nissan Versa - $178,900 ($9,095 USD)
Ford Figo - $183,900 ($9,350 USD)
Chevy Aveo - $162,700 ($8,272 USD)
Chevy Spark Classic - $136,500 ($6,940 USD)
Elio - $146,537* ($7,450*USD)

*Targeted base price

All cars listed except for the Elio has a dealer and service network in Mexico. The Chevy Spark Classic is $510 USD cheaper than the targeted price of the Elio. In addition to this, all are 4-5 passenger and many are 4 door. So, the Elio needs to be much cheaper than the Spark Classic for anyone in Mexico to even consider it. As mentioned, most Mexicans don't own cars and if they do, they only have one. Only thing the Elio would have going for it is the mileage but we still have no idea what it actually is when determined by set standards.

Interesting. It's good to be able to predict what the market would do. If the sales of the Elio would be restricted, it's best to shift the product to sport and uniqueness. A percentage of the population will buy it that way at a higher mark-up, simply for the novelty. Now the question is at what price? For example under that restraint a low volume, say 10k, you might be market comparable to the Avanza above. Some number of Mexican 'novelty' investors will do that on their own anyway, buy in the US. In this regard a Turbo and other upgrades is advised.
