Turbochargers for normal gasoline engines and the ones for large diesel engines are quite different. The gas engine ones tend to be simple fixed designs or with boost controlled via a wastegate. The larger diesel engines tend to use variable geometry to control the boost since it allows for quicker spool up at low rpm but opens up at higher rpm so it doesn't limit the peak flow. Either way, removing or forcing the blow-off valve closed is a recipe for severe compressor surge which can cause serious damage.
