No clutch in either tranny option. Only difference: the automatic selects shift points for you, manual lets you pick 'em. Your knees will be just fine.

I'm happy that the smoke is clearing, even if there are a few mirrors still in use 
. Good to know that all the engine parts have arrived and await machining. So we could see a running engine sooner rather than later. Also good to know that the ATVM loan guarantee app is official; unfortunate that Paul never had the books audited, so the app was delayed a month. WRITE TO THE DOE IN SUPPORT OF THE APPLICATION.
The tranny will be clutchless in either manual or automatic. Good news for us gimps. Makes the choice harder, but it also means the cost differential between auto and manual will be very small.
I wish they'd get going on the "option tree" process Paul mentioned. It would also be nice if they started doing at least ballpark costing on options. May be too early, but it would be nice to have an idea what a pimped-out Elio would cost.

In both versions, there IS a clutch, but it's operated by the car, not by a pedal. It's called an "automatic manual transmission" (or the other way around sometimes). I haven't driven one, so lack full understanding of how they work.

Hey, Zelio, looks like your trailer hitch will be after-market .... unless you want to wait a year or two extra for your Elio. Hhahahahah.

This is my understanding also. The gearbox is the same in both with the manual retaining the usual manual clutch pedal and gearshift while the automatic removes these and adds electro-mechanical actuators and a computer to control the clutch and gear changes. This is why the automatic is an extra cost option as it does cost extra money to add the actuators and computer to control the transmission.

That makes more sense to me than having a so called manual without a clutch pedal and gearshift. But adding or including the clutch pedal and gear shift is also added expense I would think. :-) Z

Well in the automatic there would likely be a drive mode selector in place of the gear shifter but you are correct that the clutch pedal and clutch cable and/or clutch hydraulics would go away.
