Unfortunately, many good companies like OLD DuPont were well run and employee friendly until the older generation passed on. The kids just listen to their financial advisors who spin the plants off to those who are in it to squeeze the last dime out of assets and could care less who they hurt doing it.
Precisely why you [people in general] should never stop learning, and it's ridiculously easy now days with the internet. You could literally be the next 'expert' in any subject if you apply yourself. You never know when your position/trade could be outsourced, so it behooves you not to be a 'one trick pony'.
I've been laid off from Boeing/McDonnell Douglas 4 times in the last 28 years for a total of 3 years. Had it not been for the training in ECS systems [HVAC on houses] in the Navy that allowed me pay the bills between lay offs, I'd be eating ramen noodles under the highway overpass.
Okay...huge exaggeration on the ramen/overpass thing.
