One practical drawback to towing with an Elio would be parking. Most public parking spaces are regulated by city ordinances to be 16-20 feet in length. While a motorcycle/trailer combo would typically fit just fine at a Wal*Mart or Target or curbside space, an Elio/trailer combination would likely measure in at 21+ feet, rendering you without a choice but to take up two consecutive parking spaces, similar to heavy-duty Mega Cab 3500-series pickup trucks with full 8' boxes.

But I doubt you'd get the same pass or nod in as small a vehicle as an Elio if you occupied two spaces so that your 4' wide tow-behind trailer isn't penetrating the right-of-way.

Some of the suggestions on trailers makes me a bit nervous. Which is probably similar thinking for EM. I mean, this is a very lightly loaded rear end, so if you don't want a jack-knife event the towed weight must be kept low. Certainly nothing more than a big Harley could tow.

However, I think a hitch size of the standard motorcycle type might give some buffer in that an owner will really need to do something custom to exceed the design expectation. It may even be advisable for EM to develop a smaller 75% custom size to make a stronger point.

In a court case it goes a long way for the manufacturer to have put a physical deterrent in the way. Sometimes warnings and other labeling is not enough. Anyone making a trailer for that sub-standard size could not avoid the logic that they should have known the weight limitations. This moves the responsibility from EM to the accessory manufacturer, or to the custom fabricator, if they exceed the engineering specs of the hitch.
