$6,800 ?

A 2014 Nissan Versa at $10,990 weighs 2363 pounds. The cost to purchase is $4.65 per pound.
A ?year Elio at $6,800 weighs 1,200 pounds. The cost to purchase is $5.66 per pound.

The purpose of this is not to say we buy vehicles by the pound but the price we pay for a new Elio will be $1.01 per pound of materials more than a Nissan Versa.

If Nissan can sell for that cost why can't Elio?

Ok the fire suit is on so have at it.:rolleyes:

Thank You for that perspective! No flames from me! The Versa, at 11K has sooo many dot requirements that this autocycle won't need to comply with. The Elio at 50% less weight, 25% less chassis, 50% less interior...I feel a little bit better :)

Well, there is that every-itchy inflation thing. A 2015 Versa is $12K (without destination charges — $12.8k delivered). And while there's a good argument to make that the Elio can be built for less than a normal car, I'm not sure that weight is the best measure. After all, a Volkswagen XL1 only weighs 1,700 lbs but costs $150k.

However, I think the price of the Versa is still somewhat reassuring. While it might not be possible to build an Elio for 56% of a Versa's price ($6800), 75% doesn't seem impossible ($9000).

I find it incredible that random, nameless, faceless internet people have an inside line to Paul Elio.
...
By incredible, I mean NOT credible.

Give me a break.

You can choose to believe whatever you wish however what you believe really has no bearing on truth.

Right now you are doing just what we were discussing which is making statements without the facts to back then up. The conference calls are known to be true and this information is backed up with documentation which a number of members have seen.

It is true, the weight difference is not that much savings, but the multitude of DOT certifications that are NOT required, adds up to a lot LESS R&D time and money. All of the pennies add up to dollars saved.

If they plan on a real "5 Star" rating (which I don't know how you get for a motorcycle) doesn't that mean expensive testing by destruction of expensive prototype vehicles as you slam them into walls/cars/each other? Plus the re-designs needed (if needed) to make it pass.

I think the 5-star thing was added to make people feel more comfortable about buying a "motorcycle", but it will bite Elio in the ass in the end.

Well, we kinda do know about the price of an basic elio. We know the base price is $6800 but EM says it is about $300 more right now..so lets use that ok. $7100. The destination charge is basically $750 because many tour officials are quoting that. $7100+$750 is $7850....then a prep fee has been mentioned by EM..I'll guess $150. $7850+$150.= $8000. I can say with confidence the price may be at least $200 more by late 2015..because i see my grocery bill go up every month. Add at lease, another $700-$800 according to Jerome the national sales manager for the automatic. (we are trying to keep it under $1000.)
..If the versa 5 speed is $11,000 then it is $3000 more but can carry 4 people and has a decent sized trunk. I am not sure of the warranty, but Elio is only 3/36. That is not going to stop me, will it stop any of you ?

Yes, and those things would be needed if it was a car too. I remember when the VW Beetle stopped being manufactured for sale in the US... Still made in Mexico, and many people still wanted to import them. So,someone did the math...And,IIRC, to upgrade it to meet DOT requirements, would have almost doubled the cost.
And the Elio can still be made safe, but the different components won't need to go thru the costly certification processes.
