I like how relatively honest and open Elio is about developments compared to how companies traditionally operate. It makes sense for the bootstrapping but It's also clear why this is not often done in most companies, as John says above (though Elio's manufacturing paradigm would mean it would make some sense for the company even when established).
Companies could lower claims from a better reality because of quality variation, legal concerns, catchier or less believable numbers, making a competing product look better, or other sales psychology tricks. You'll certainly hear fewer complaints if they are better than if they are worse though!

Elio's would sell if they only got 40 MPG. Fun, affordable, safe are my priority's.

I graduated from Evergreen, down in Olympia but still managed to spend time in Seattle, Bainbridge Island, and Renton areas with friends, I miss the Pacific Northwest quite a bit sometimes. Personally I think Elio Motors can be too open, in ways that give people who like to complain plenty of things to complain about without actually hitting on something truly problematic, for example I know that most people are leery creativity and new things when it comes to actually trying them vs thinking or talking about them, which leads to an inevitable "the sky is falling" debate. That is then exacerbated by Elio Motors channeling Steve Jobs quip that 'people don't know what they want until you show it to them', e.g. pre-selling en masse something that doesn't exist, building a "safe" motorcycle... no car... no autocycle, etc, etc. Some will see debacle, others will see a rebuke to the world being flat. I tend to see it as cheaper than a years worth of Time Warners' Preferred TV bundle.

Now I know you. My younger daughter graduated from Evergreen. The NW is the coolest part of the country,Evergreen the coolest college, both my kids live in Seattle (Green Lake & Capital Hill). I have it on good authority that the mass we are standing on is accelerating in a vertical direction.
