I am now wondering about the possibility of using a spare front tire as a temp for the rear tire... 1 spare could potentially serve all 3 spots, and mount on the side of the car for long trips....

I don't even remember the last time I had to change a tire. I owned some cars for years without ever having to get flats fixed, or the tires changed. Unless you drive in very remote areas... and even then with an auto club membership and whatever stuff in a can comes with the Elio, you should be able to make it to the next tire place.

Using a front tire in the rear might void your warranty should anything happen (if it is even possible), is probably a terrible idea for handling reasons anyway and your fuel economy will suffer in a big way if the spare is carried on the outside.

I have done motorcycle trips of thousands of miles on partly very bad roads (without spares of course) and never felt the need to carry replacement tires. Just make sure that you leave home with good tires, as flats seem more likely when tires reach the end of their lifespan.

My guess is that this will be possible despite the different width tires as EM will likely be using the same wheel for both. This is easily possible because tires are generally designed to fit wheels within a two inch width range.

15" 135mm width tires would generally be designed to fit wheel sizes between 15x3 and 15x5.
15" 175mm width tires would generally be designed to fit wheel sizes between 15x4.5 and 15x6.5

As the two tires overlap at 15x4.5 and 15x5 my guess would be that EM will be using one of these wheels sizes.

Even if the wheels are also different sizes as long as the front wheel has the same offset and lug pattern as the rear you will still be able to use a front as a spare.

Of course, as with many things EM related, we just have to wait and see how this all plays out. :)

I understand all that, but sometimes you just want to take a tire with you... Why wait on a service to come out, or gamble on it in very remote areas, when you can just switch it out yourself? I wouldn't want to take it with me on daily driving, but I would love the option.
