The future of fuel-efficient cars looks a little brighter after a round of grants announced this week by the Department of Energy.

Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz announced Thursday that the Department of Energy will be providing $55 million to universities, research laboratories, and companies to find new ways for vehicles — both plug-in electric and fuel-powered — to become cheaper and more efficient. The money will go toward projects related to multiple issues, including advanced batteries, advanced combustion engines, and fuels technologies, and the selections of grant recipients will be made based on applications sent to the DOE.

“Energy Department investments in advanced vehicle technologies have had a major impact on the industry, driving down costs for consumers and reducing carbon emissions,” Moniz said in a statement. “These projects will continue America’s leadership in building safe, reliable, and efficient vehicles to support a strong, 21st century transportation system.”

another IC engine will not exactly put EM near the front of the research line. They seem to be looking beyond this.
Cutting up the pot won't leave much per approved applicant. I think it's a dead end not worth pursuing for EM, but great to see DOE supporting new transportation engineering

I don't, as it is actually running in the black! The Conservative push is to get out of debt, this IS!
they might "WANT" to defund everything, but it'll never happen.
1. a more centralist republican party is emerging, ( i.e. abortion bill yesterday)
2. It wouldn't pass in the Senate
3. President Veto
Reality will prevail, that's what makes this such a great country
Defund the IRS- get real
eliminate the dept of ed, EPA??? and oops i can't remember the other one, what far away galaxy do you come from to think this place could run without the feds
why not do away with stoplights, don't they impose the governments will on you?
Ask even the reddest of necks affected by yesterday's oil spill in Montana if it would be o.k. to not clean up the mess.
or the gulf oil spill, or fracking wells causing quakes and contaminated water Ohio. W Virginia
How about eliminating Social security?? when you get out of your pick-up tonight, ask your grandparents if that's cool with them. Why not eliminate the V.A. ..........(what I can't hear you)

"defund" doesn't mean ONLY defund to zero. Repugs already "defunded" IRS, SEC, etc by many $100Ms. Who benefits most when IRS, SEC don't have the resources to investigate fraud, to enforce the law? the wealthy and BigCorp.

the abortion bill yesterday won't become law, but it blocks companies whose employee PRIVATE health plans cover abortion from deducting the cost of the insurance program as a business expense. EXTREMELY radical, not "moderate"
