Rick,
You may want to aquatint your guy about this: http://www.aamva.org/Search.aspx?searchtext=autocycle :)

POST#: http://elioowners.com/threads/legal-motorcycle-license-and-helmet-laws.1001/page-6#post-5780

I've been in contact with Joel Sheltrown, VP of Government Affairs, at Elio Motors and he email me the information for an "auto cycle". I will be meeting with my local state representative to help add this to my state's statute.

We can all helping make it easier for this new vehicle become a reality.
You can also go to the AAMVA website and download their "Best Practices for regulation of 3-wheel vehicles." (I believe it is 17 pages.) They also have a 5:40 Youtube video demonstrating the differences between 3 wheel motorcycles and the autocycle. Elio is used in the video as an example of the autocycle. This is the organization that state DMVs go to to get Best Practices advice for motor vehicles. The working document and the video were from October 2013. The chairman of the group is from Oregon which is probably why Oregon's law is so simple and so clear. An Elio will be licensed as a motorcycle but the driver does not need a helmet or a motorcycle endorsement.

Thanks, I do have access to that info. It seems to be moving along the political pipeline........I don't want to confuse the process with the autocycle classification at this point in time. I'm hoping for a simple addendum to the existing code........enclosed cabin vehicles with a steering wheel that doesn't require the driver to straddle or sit astride it. MC Endorsement EXEMPT. I'll let you know how it reads when I get a copy of the final draft. It may turn out they use the AAMVA Manual.

It would also cover two wheel enclosed cabin motorcycles like the Lit Motors C-1 rather than the restriction to three wheelers.

I like yellow, now if we can get the MC endorsement issue fixed by the end of 2015 I will be a happy Elioer.

I bet Joel Sheltrown is working hard in NC to make some changes.

I've never met him, have spoken with him on the phone once, and have exchanged some emails ... bottom line, I'm impressed .... as a former state legislator he has an understanding of how things work in state government .... I understand he will be speaking before NC's transportation committee and I hope to be there to watch and learn

When discussing the Elio as a narrow enclosed motorcycle most people seeing a photo misjudge it's actual size compared to to other motorcycles and or cars on the road. I use this photo which helps to put the Elio's size into perspective which is an extremely important comparison for regulators and politicians to fully grasp. They are usually surprised thinking it was much smaller.

The ELIO is very very similar in size to the 2000-2006 Honda INSIGHT. I wish Elio had taken a few pointers from the Insight engine design, ignoring the IMA system of course. As far as their MPG, I think they will get 75 mpg, but 84 will have to be up to a "Hyper miler" type driver.

They have already reported higher than 75 mpg but of course if you have a heavy foot on the gas that will change the results. :-) Z
