In my experience most manual transaxles are splash lubricated (which is ok for towing) A few years ago I rebuilt a Honda Accord 6 speed manual (Aisin I believe) and was surprised to find an oil pump and screen driven by the differential. This design has splash and pressurized oil lubrication in tow.

Why are the wheels of the trailer so far back? The trailer would be very tongue heavy- not too safe.

That is actually a rendering of someones creative idea for a three wheel trailer. With a third wheel in the front it should not really have much downward tongue weight at all.

I agree it will be very popular as a dinghy and there is even better news as not only is the Elio being designed to be towed but Elio Motors has stated that both the manual and automatic can be safely towed in neutral without issue as internally they are both manual transmissions.
On the road the other day, came up on a full size SUV being towed by I think, the biggest fifth wheeled camper you can buy, being towed by a fully decked out Volvo semi tractor with sleeper.

Can you say, major money? This is not the one I saw

I would like to see a trailer accessory when the tow hitch gets introduced, how about something like this?

[Broken External Image]

The concept is great but the weight on the hitch is much greater than with normal two-wheeled trailer

There is a whole motorcycle trailer industry out there with everything from simple cargo trailers to quite elaborate tent camper set ups. I'm sure Elio could tow any of these. I want a trailer hitch just to have the hard point to attach a bicycle rack or a cargo shelf.

the Elio is being designed and built for high mileage .... my hunch is that its mileage will be cut by more than 50%, by pulling even a lightweight, aerodynamic trailer .... in addition, I suspect a tranny cooler will be needed and possibly an upgrade for the engine cooling system
