I've owned a 45mpg 3/5 metro coup and I currently own two yamaha cruisers that get 80mpg and 54 mpg respectively. Not knowing the elio existed, I looked at the can am spyders two years ago and envisioned almost exactly what elio motors is attempting to produce. There are metro forums out there (the best is out of Northeastern Ohio) that will tell you how to increase a metro's (carbed) gas mileage by 20 mpg and more. Most of the metro mods are things that elio is incorporating into their build. The automatic transmission metros suck like few others do, but the 5-speeds are an absolute blast to drive. The metro 3-cyl usually lasts 150,000 miles or more. I sold the 16 year old car simply because It was starting to show signs that it would start to "nickle and dime me", even though there weren't that many moving parts on the car. Though the majority of the metro crowd is usually a very proud and loyal bunch, there are just not that many of them still on the road. Bottom line is that the life expectancy of the average metro wasn't much past ten or twelve years (regardless of mileage) in the absence of meticulous care.
I envisioned the Elio two years ago and I've got a few comments on it. This is a logical and natural direction for not only the internal combustion powered commuter vehicle, but for a vehicle with any driven by any other type of power as well. The USA and the world needs this car and they need it now. The working man needs this car.
Yesterday I did simple math. I took the published total proven world oil reserves and divided it by last year's world consumption and came up with a total of 45 years. That's if consumption stays the same as last year. World consumption is projected to double in a few short years as a number of key countries expotentially increase the number of gasoline powered vehicles driven on their roads. So, taking into account that actual oil industry experts themselves have said that almost all of the world's accessible (getting more energy out than energy invested) oil has already been discovered, I'm guessing that we don't even have 45 years of oil left to burn through. There's one thing I feel certain of and that's the fact that we most certainly do not have 45 years of relatively cheap (and I'm talking $3.50 to $5.00 range) oil left. Watch the stuff skyrocket in price in less than 20 years. I'm not even going to get into the enviromental aspect of this or any of the other types of power generation. Nope. Not going to go there. Most of us already know all about the mess we're in.
This vehicle makes so much sense, it should be a crime that it's not already on the streets. I truely believe that if these people are able to meet their goals and see this thing to fuition, they'll sell millions of them.
That will mean they will have overcome the already in-place car mfg establishment, the automotive dealer association monopoly, their politicians, and the state and local governments that see a chance to profit instead of a chance to help the average person.
I really would like to see elio motors become a little more transparent. The verbal and written commitments to (what I believe to be) attainable goals (at least for the first year of production) have been made and made again. It really seems that that's all that's ever said. It's time for elio to really connect with the public and not just churn more of the same out on their blog week after week. I absolutely love the new body style. Put the new motor, transmission, exhaust, ac/heat, window motors, power lock, suspension, air bags and am/fm in the thing, and I wouldn't ask for a thing more. Let the public know what you're doing, not just what you PLAN to do. Especially when it comes to talking directly to the people who are putting their hard-earned money at risk to believe in this (at this point) dream.
If Elio is not able to get government funding in the form of grants and/or loans to secure the total funds to make the whole dream actually happen, where in the world are the innovative philantropists such as Bill Gates on this thing? Would investing in this thing not have extremely far-reaching benefits for average people in this country and, indeed, all over the planet?
If this endeavor fails and a major auto mfg fills the void (I'm confident that there WILL be a elio-like vehicle made by SOMEONE in the next six years), you're not going to see a price that's anywhere near $7000. It will be a "Niche" product because of the newness, coolness, and mpg, and it will be priced as most "niche" products are. High.
That said, I foresee the price of the second year's production models of the Elio being considerably higher than $6800. Hope not. Would be soooo good for business if it were to stay the same price, but I just don't see it happening. So if you're planning to hang back till you can no longer get in on the first year's production, be prepared for a possible price increase to insure the company's survival.
Like I said, I could care less about options, mods, wraps, add-ons, changes, baubles, etc. Those things seem to get a lot of discussion here and everywhere else that the Elio is discussed. Give me the basic quality car asap. It's cool enough as it is (@ $6800), or at least as it could be if someone kicks this whole thing to life. I can get the same official press propaganda vids and articles at a bunch of different locations all over the media. Don't tell me what you WANT to do. Tell me what the heck you ARE doing. Do not distance yourself from the part of the public that (for now) believes in you. Taking the "mule" to countless mall shows and news clip video ops and shaking hands is NOT what I'm talking about. CONNECT in a real manner and promote vast amounts of trust. Most of us are shell-shocked by all the BS that's been forced down our throats in the last fourty years. Make the whole thing an inside process that we can share in with you step by step the whole way through to the goal. That's the only way you're going to win enough of us skeptical Americans over and I see it as the only way you're going to win the day.
